So as I find myself taking wheels on and off more often my shoes =))I’m thinking a battery impact gun would be nice.

any recommendations for ones that don’t break the bank?

I bought one of these a few weeks ago and I've found it very good, spins the wheel nuts off quite easily.

First saw it on Project Binky and was very impressed the way it was undoing rusted nuts etc with ease, not the cheapest but seems very well made and real quality.

Compared it with a friends Snap-On one thats supposed to be 850nm and this was doing up nuts tighter than the Snap-On could undo them, and this one managed to undo every nut the Snap-On had done up which although very unscientific seemed to indicate that it was more powerfull than the Snap-On which cost nearly £900 a couple of years ago.

BTW the torch is not impressive, the light output whilst handy is not great.

I bought this a few years ago...

A little on the pricey side but worth every penny. Think of it as an investment how much time it'll save with rusty seized on bolts.

Not found a single nut or bolt that it can't undo.

Also looks like it's gone up in price, i i paid £300 for mine.

I have this one,

450Nm my arse. it is actually around 120Nm. but at least you get 2 batteries.
I have torque tested mine. Ideal for wheels but not if you have tightened them more than that to begin with as it wont undo them. \
Sent it back once, they sent another brand new one and it is exactly the same.

I bought a Lidl one afterwards and it is more than twice as powerful

I bought a Ryobi 18V cordless in a kit with a 4 1/2" angle grinder. Very useful kit. About £150 on Amazon for the impact wrench.

I did buy a Battriol one rated at 450nm which couldn’t even undo wheel bolts torqued at 120nm which went straight back to Amazon and paid the extra for a Makita DTW1001Z 18 V LXT Brushless 3/4In Impact Wrench Bare Unit, Blue, Large https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01ALRP254/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_KBT5EbV3TB006 was an outlay but bought none Makita batteries to save a bit of cash and nothing it can’t handle so far whipped off hub nuts on its lowest setting.

Wow that's saved me some pain. How the heck can they advertise 450nm!!

On another note- if you use this do you still need to use a torque wrench to check torques or can these be trusted to be accurate each time once you have set it?

I use a torque stick when tightening, they are rated to the setting you need, and also stop the more powerful guns from overtightening
I've never seen one of these, how do they work ?

That is an impact driver actually. You can use these for stripping things down but I wouldn't use one for rebuilding stuff. They are quite powerful tools. Mine is a 1/2" square drive which you use with normal (impact) sockets. I never trust any impact wrench to tighten wheel nuts /bolts, I use a torque wrench to fully tighten them after running them down on the lowest setting. I'll add a link after a bit.

When they get to their rated torque they just vibrate and do not tighten any more. Personally i don't like them.

Tony.

ps. That's not to say they don't work but as I have a torque wrench which will do many jobs I think these are an expense you don't need as they only do one job.

they are only £15 and stop you over tightening the wheel bolts when using a bigger than 120NM impact gun.
Far quicker, lives with my wheel bolt sockets,
and no need to faff with a torque wrench which when you get it out you find it is probably not set to what you want.
Or if you do buy a torque wrench to use and keep set just for your wheels only, then that is far more expensive I have many tools that only do one job....
Spark plug socket
oil filter wrench
valve spring compressor
7mm brake allen key
brake piston pusher
brake pipe tool
etc etc

personally I do like them.... :p

A torque wrench should never be set at what you might need, they should be unwound to zero before being stored.
