Look looking to replace a Hudl 2 with something that has more storage and performance- the hudle has lasted a few years now, good buy for younger kids.

With Android I've learned that although they have SD cards not all let you use the SD card as internal storage (in other words the card only helps storage for media but not running apps).

The tablet is for gaming like mine craft, real racing etc. Would like good storage (internal) plus SD card, not crash/lag a lot and decent battery. Also have a cheap to replace screen (i.e. Not like some iPads that have the electronics stuck to the glass so instead of £50 to replace it's £200).

Ive ruled at Amazon products and Apple.

Asus seem to have some goood reviews and refurb units under £100 on Amazon.

Any tech gurus recently looked at tablets and can advise? It's worse than choosing spark plugs for the Z!

It all depends on your budget. You'll struggle to find a flagship tablet - something like an iPad or a Samsung Tab at the cheap end of the market, and if you do they'll likely have outdated hardware in them as they'll be the older models.

I know that in the past couple of years tablets and phones from China have improved significantly and are starting to get recognition here in the UK. Essentially they offer you a device with great specifications for a price much cheaper than what the flagships sell for. The only catch with this is that you may have to get it imported in to the UK and if something goes wrong, a warranty claim may prove difficult.

Do take a second to look at this - http://www.techadvisor.co.uk/review/android-tablets/xiaomi-mi-pad-3-review-3658915/

It's a brand that isn't very popular but for your money you are getting excellent storage, a very good screen with decent pixel density and the processor and ram aren't too bad either. Yes, it's not got nfc but who needs that in a tablet!

If you're looking for tablets on Amazon check the release date of the tablet as you want it to be somewhat future proof. If you're looking at refurb units less than a £100 you might find that the hardware in the unit is outdated.

Also, something like geek bench will let you see how the device you choose compares to others available in the market.

I'd just take a look around and pick 3 or 4 tablets that you like and post them up on here so that we can look at the specs!

@Faheem exactly, so much to look, like choosing gearbox oil for the Z, too much choice and factors :)

I've looked at Mi pad and it looks a good but.
I don't like the lack of UK availablity and warranty- at £200 i this it's quite a lot for these drawbacks.

What do you think of the Asis 8 at £129

I like it but for yheb16gb on board storage- I thought ok I could put in a high speed SD as internal memory but reading review as I see Asus has blocked this function. That's irritating...

Not sure 16gb will go far for big games as I believe they use internal memory not as cards space.

For £129 @Dino D it doesn't look too bad especially if it's just for the kids. I don't know how it will handle games.

You could pop into store and have a play with the tablet if they have any on display?

The screen resolution is the only thing that would put me off, however, it'd be worth looking at the screen in person and judging whether or not you're happy with its quality.

Been looking and think that 16gb onboard storage is just too little, the Hudl get full with 8gb storage so 16wont go far. He's very careful with his tablet, this has lasted 3yrs.

So thinking something a bit better storage wise - looked on eBay and found an Irish seller for the Mi Pad 64gb at £230 and can be delivered in a sensible time:https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182619548590

Just wondering if I'm going this spend £230 should I look at others.
I see refurb IPad mini 64gb is £200 but I prefer Android as it has better parental control/safety apps than Apple.

@Dino D you definitely should mate! The MiPad is just the first one I came across when searching for a non flag ship tablet. I've no real personal experience with the company so whilst in theory the device should be good with the specs that it has, you'd need to do a bit of research into the MiPad itself before committing to buy it.

My phone is a OnePlus, not many people have heard of the brand but it too is Chinese and I got great specs for the price I paid. Had it 2 years now and no problems.

@t-tony A few years ago there were lots of knock off iPhones in the market, I don't know whether these are still around but essentially they looked identical (almost) to the iPhones of that era but they had rubbish specs and you could pick them up for cheap.

Here's a video of one, bit long at 45 minutes but have a quick scroll and you'll get the idea.

Thankfully, I think most of the phones that come from there now are well specced and build quality is good too. It's just claiming warranty that could be an issue should a problem occur.
