Hi,

Had a bit on an oil leak develop on the Z, so thought best to get it checked out. Thought it might be the rocker cover gasket as it seemed to be showing the typical symptoms. Booked it it in to the BMW specialist in Northampton to investigate.

They tell me it is not the rocker cover gasket - that is dry as a bone, but it seems to be coming from the gearbox selector shaft. My car is a 2.0 fitted with the Getrag gearbox. They have never had to change a selector shaft seal and were not sure if this could be done from the outside or if the gearbox has to be stripped down. They suggested I contact a gearbox specialist they use, which I have. They are not sure either! - they don't tend to touch many BMW boxes because they say you can't get the internals.

The only other thing to note is that the gearbox came out at the beginning of May to have a new clutch fitted (by a different garage). No mention was made of an oil leak then. I did get the gearbox oil changed at the time and wonder if it was perhaps overfilled a little?

Hopefully someone out there might know the answer! Can anyone suggest a place in the midlands that might be able to help?

Many thanks for any assistance.

Hi

I have done the selector shaft seal in a 2.0L Z3 manual. Did the job with the transmission in the car. It's fiddly as you have to remove a clip blind/by feel. As for the old seal you either pull it out with a pick or tap it into the housing enough to fit the new seal. I tapped mine in and fitted the new seal on top. No more leaks for me.
