So, here's the "easy" way to do an oil change for the gearbox.
I'll assume you have the required 3 x 500ml transmission oil of the correct type etc.
One thing you will need is 1,5 metres of 10mm plastic tube. easy enough to find in a pet shop that does fish / aquariums etc.
Other things - 17mm socket wrench, a good rag to wipe up any mess and your hands.
10mm drill bit and drill.
1. Jack up and drain the old oil. Clean magnetic plug and around the threads etc on the gearbox. Best done with the gearbox oil at running temp. Leave it raining with the car lowered to a level / floor position.
2. Remove the lid from one of the 500ml bottles and also the plastic tube thingy which extends out. A slight tug will pull it out the bottle completely.
3. Use a 10mm drill bit and drill to drill a 10mm hole to one side of the center of the bottle cap. Don't go too close to the edge where the cap threads are.
4. The plastic tube you removed from the bottle has a flange at one end. The flange must be on the inside of the bottle cap. You will also notice a small 2mm hole in the side of the tube aprox 15mm above the flange. You will need to keep that little hole visual when filling so you can close / open it with your thumb or finger.
4. Pull out the leather gearshift gaiter plastic clip in thingy on the console. (You don't have to remove the gearknob or the gaiter). Below the gaiter is a thick rubber sound proofinng lump - just lift it up as far as you can.
Below that, there's a large rubber clip in grommet which seals the gearshift lever shaft as it passes through to the gearbox. The grommet has a rim on the underside of the car metal tunnel of about 20mm wide. Only pull the grommet out of it's hole on the right hand side and only about 180 degrees. Don't need to pull it out completely The refill plug on the gearbox is on the right hand side of the box and aprox 500 - 600mm towards the front of the car from where the shift lever is.
Feed the 10mm plastic tube down and forward to the front of the car through the gap you have once the grommet is out the way. Push about 600mm of tube through.
5. Raise the car again - the old oil should be well drained. Replace and tighten the drain plug. Remove the filler plug on the side of the box and find your plastic pipe and feed it over the gearbox mounting and into the filler hole until the end of the pipe is stopped by whatever is in the box that stops it - (aprox 100mm).
6. Lower the car with the waste oil collection pan under the filler plug area. Withe the plastic extension pipe pushed through the bottle cap, push the other end into the open end of the tube which will comfortably extend outside the car and allow you to complete the job easily standing up at the driver door. Get the first bottle of oil - the one that sacrificed it's plastic extension now fitted through the cap and screw the modified cap onto the bottle.
7 Remember that small hole !! You can turn the plastic extension so you can see it with the bottle of oil now inverted to send the oil down the tube - seal the hole with your thumb and squeeze the plastic bottle to force oil down the tube - to allow air back into the now slightly crushed bottle simply lift your finger off that small hole. Repeat the process until all the oil is sent down the tube to the box. Remove the modified cap and fit to the next bottle after removing the plastic extension from the new bottle.
Squeeze all the oil from the second 500ml bottle down the tube as you did with the first. Repeat for the third 500ml bottle as for the other two. Don't worry about the limit of 1.3 litres of oil or trying to guess the 300 ml from the last bottle. The oil will simply spill over into your waste collection tray under the car once the level gets to the filler hole.
8. detach the last bottle from the tube and remove the modified cap from the tube. Get your clean up rag and wipe the end of the tube plus 300mm on the outside. Allow the 1/4 light window to hold it up high by closing the door so it pinches the tube between the window frame and the screen A pillar.
Raise the car and with your rag in hand remove the tube from the filler hole and allow it to hang into your waste collection pan. Refit the filler plug and tighten to spec. By this time most of any residual oil in the tube will have emptied into your waste pan, but it won't be totally devoid of oil. Open the car door to release the tube at the top, and pull the tube from out from inside the car. Be ready to cover the end of the tube with your rag as it clears the rubber gearshift grommet and comes into the car. There may be a drop of oil hanging onto it's tip.
9. refit the rubber grommet, gearshift gaiter etc and compliment yourself on how bloody easy it is to do a transmission oil change..
