Gear lever slop

Im assuming the only way to tighten up the gear lever slop, is to drop the gearbox?

As I understand it, there are parts of the linkage that wear and that's what causes the slop. Those parts are serviceable without removing the transmission. Here is a step by step and if you google something like "BMW E36 Gearshift slop" you can find lots of videos on UTube that can help you.
