Got the LED indicators in now to go along with all the other lights, thanks to @5harp3y for supplying the LED flasher unit (great bit of kit) brings the look of the car up to date. Sorry no photos, tried but every photo they flashed off so gave up

Hi. I don't mean to hijck this thread but, here's some pics of what I just did for tail light upgrade to LED. First, I added a single 1156 socket into the empty inboard location, then moved the running light to the outboard brake
Z3-Taillights.jpg

Z3-Taillights.jpg Z3-Tail-Lamp-Sockets.jpg light location and replaced socket with 1157 dual element. Now I have 3 high watt sockets on each side light when braking as well as the center trunk brake lights in LED.. I'll post a pic of them lit up later. Sorry for the clumsy pic posts... I'm new. ;-)

Mine don't look like that my bulb holders are all separate on my 99 face-lift z3. :)

Sounds great I'm just not sure I understand where the empty inboard location is? mine has all 5 bulb locations in use = Indicator, Reversing, tail, brake and fog or am I missing something?

Could be the difference between model/year or US/Canadian vs Euro versions. My '97 base roadster only came with 5 sockets setup per side... counting the outer corner 194 small bulb marker light. The lower inboard 6th location shows in the pic with a conventional bulb) had no socket installed and the opening into the lens still had a knock-out in place. All were single element bulbs.

Yeh I see, that's where our Fog light is and we don't have the marker light, difference between Canadian and Euro I'm guessing

A lot of countrys don't require a rear fog light mate, I had a Mitsubishi FTO V6 MIVEC imported and had to have a rear fog light fitted for the SVA

Looks interesting @TedC I wish I was good at electrics but unfortunately I'm not! Must be much brighter which translates to safer in my book, JIM

I retro fitted a right hand rear light unit from a left hand drive car to my 2003 Z4 and now have 2 reversing lights, 2 rear fog lights. The only limit is your imagination.

Tony.

And a certain degree of understanding, me working on car electrics is like watching a monkey trying to play chess "messy" :(

I totally fit your picture @Nodzed and especially after looking at the wiring diagrams for the z3 and how components are conjoined I shudder at the thought of changing anything but a light bulb!! There I've said it out loud!! JIM

Jim Car electrics aren't everyone's thing .
I'm in the trade and know plenty of good capable mechanics who wouldn't touch car electrics .
By modern standards the z3 is an electronic dinosaur but then again sometimes simpler is better. Stephen.

hi @Stevo7682 , by that standard I too am a dinosaur too but I find the fact that each circuit has an effect on two, three or more other computerized pieces I don't feel comfortable with the electrics in my Z3. And I have no one close by to assist me so I guess if something does go wrong I'll have to get stuck in and rely on my fellow members to bail me out!! Luckily the car I bought in the UK has been a godsend and has only needed two bulb changes, new tires and wiper blades in two and a half years. JIM

I think I'm safe. The Z doesn't appear to have any electric components embossed with "Lucas"... (insert your favorite "Prince of Darkness" joke here) ;-)
