Hi everyone I've just signed up. I recently bought a 1998 Z3 2.8. There seems to be a smell of petrol in the boot, the petrol filler cap and rubber boot are pershed would this cause the smell in the boot?

Any help would be much appreciated.

:welcome:to the forum from West Cumbria. I'd change for a new OEM cap, would probably cure it, the fuel vapour is probably escaping and get trapped in the boot.

Thanks for all your replies.

Does anyone know if you can get a replacement for the seal or do I have to replace the whole cap? My one is a lockable cap.

isnt the fuel cap seal related to the evap system, and should it not be airtight ? If not i would have thought it would throw up a c.e.l and have a vacuum issue... leading to bad idle and decreased performance...
Don't think it's designed to be airtight from an inward 'leak' so to speak otherwise you wouldn't get fuel after a short while due to a vacuum. Shouldn't let vapour escape though for the obvious.

You can make a new seal if it's a flat circle of thin rubber.

The tank has to be "vented" at some point other wise the tank will create a vacuum and make fuel delivery almost impossible.
Back in the day Chrylser brought out a locking filler cap due to the national pastime of roaming late at night syphoning fuel from unprotected cars.
What happed was they produced a "non-venting" locking cap for a none venting tank. OOPS! Where I worked a guy who worker for the old YEB came in extolling the virtues of his miserly 1725cc Hunter, saying it had lots of miles and he had only managed to get 1 gallon in at fill up.
On closer examination on a ramp we found out why. The tank had been sucked flat by the mechanical fuel pump dragging fuel up to the single Stromberg carb. The reason was he had fitted anew locking cap, from our spares dept.:(
