Hi all, my z3 2.0 is only doing around 20 mpg, mixed driving and I’m not heavy footed. It’s been suggested that I buy a new chip. Has anyone any experience of these new chips?

Hi and :welcome: from Pembrokeshire in Wales , I am not a mechanic by any stretch but I would be inclined to look for the reason for the poor fuel economy first , my 2.8 averages 30/35 mpg , sounds like it is running to rich so I would check the air intake pipes for any splits allowing in unmetered air of put on a diagnostic reader and see what it reader to from there ,
I'm sure someone will be along shortly with more options

You shouldn't "chip" a car unless it is perfect, i.e. no air leaks, freshly serviced with new filters, etc.

If you don't, the chip will correct the faults and the car will be out-of-tune when it is repaired.

Hi @JT01, :welcome: to the forum from me too in Staffordshire. Something definitely wrong for that consumption, unless you are really enjoying yourself:whistle:

Don't think re-chipping is the way to go, as suggested in earlier post think there are other things to check out first. I get around 24mpg even with my Z3 M Coupe on normal reasonable driving - a bit less if I decide to enjoy myself!! :coolsteer)

No point in chipping a 2.0l, however I had a 2.0 years ago and it was ok on mpg and suddenly it became a liability, went from around 30mpg to 20, not a clue what caused it, I sold it

My 2000 2.0 Auto managed 25-27 MPG so there's definitely something amiss.
