Front rotors

So while dicking about....and being stupid as usual....the front passenger side rotor give up....
The disk nearly detached from the hub....when I stripped the rotor from the car I seem to have snapped about 40% of the spines .
I most admit...it was fun....up until the moment I thought we was going to die in the middle of the mountains....then it stopped being fun....

So...im going to swap both sides...wheres the best place to buy OE spec disks from?

And if your reading this ....check your rotors....just saying..

I had a vented disc collapse on my VW Touareg a few years ago. That gets your attention fairly quickly. I changed all 4.
That is a part of the disc which is hardly visible until the wheel is off, and as there isno stripping down it quite easily passes the MOT.

Your right T...she just passed her MOT a couple of days ago...
Although...he did fail her at first because he set the bloody airbag light of by moving the seat...so I had to go down with tool to rest it..!

I use EBC for all my rotors and pads.

You should do because the EBC are probably not floating.

If you want floating talk to Reyland engineering - they’ll make you anything, even the bells and they not silly money.

Any idea what caused this- I would have thought floating is a safe design given it use in motorsport.

No idea ...just a loud snapping noise and the wobble from hell....i was shifting at the time ..but even so...it shouldn't bloody snap..!!

If you hit the disk with something hard...you'll get a loud ring...that was the noise.

They aren't floating, but nor are OEM.

Floating discs on a performance car are only needed if you are racing and need to change them quickly, or you can't be bothered / don't have time to sort the run-out.

The tolerance is in the TIS. I can't recall what it is, but (from memory) I think it is quite generous.

The OEM Z3M is classed as floating, they sit on brass pins old school style.

In terms of performance you wont find much on the market any better than the BMW discs, the alternatives are mostly solid/casted, unless like Dino suggests Reyland make good discs.

Those are definitely floating - you can see the pins.

I have a set of OEM at home. I'll check them when I get back. I have EBC on the car, so I'm not sure if I can check them very easily, but I'm pretty sure they are like the ones in the image - I thought it was a single casting, maybe it's not.

I checked the ones in my shed. They came off @bertiejaffa 's old car. They are not floating - it is a single casting. There are no maker's marks on them, but they do have curved vanes, so are definitely meant for the M.

I wasn't able to check the ones on my shed. I should be able to check that tonight or tomorrow.

These are the discs you get from BMW. The M embossed on the hub is a give away along with the brass separating the inner and outer.

I did say "meant for" the M - they are definitely not BMW. I'll check the ones on the car when I get a chance - I know they are EBC.

EBC's D979 are solid and not floating.
