Hi All

I thought id pop this post on for you all and kinda proud of my work (first time ever done this) but you can achieve a half decent result on your bumpers using rattle cans

I used halfords bmw colour match paint, plastic primer, clear lacquer. Its not perfect and i will maybe improve but its 100% better than the blistiring mess it was before.

Pics attached. Cost me circa £60 all together with sanding paper, small filler, masking tape and cans etc

Thanks

Neil

My front bumper needs to have the clear coat redone, I might consider doing it myself after seeing your job.

Word to the wise- you'll get a better gloss from the lacquer coat if the bumper panel is vertical. That way you keep a "wet edge" for successive sprays to merge. Goes for any rattlecan gloss finish.

Be good to see other peoples jobs if get round to doing them. Took about 4 hours with waiting for drying and sanding inbetween coats.

I used 400 wet sand before primer get it back to plastic.
Then 600 dry sand inbetween coats of primer
Then 800 inbetween base coats to keep smooth. Then lacquer.

All together i used

2 x 300ml cans of primer
4 x 300ml cans of base coat (5 would probably been better but not enough in stock at halfords)
2 x 500ml of lacquer

Cheers.

I will add sorry. Build each layer slowly and do long sprays from side to side walking as you go. Start off the car end off the car or go left and right as you go across from side to side but move your hand quickly.

It will look awful for a long time but when it comes together at the end its a good feeling...

Well done mate
Try and use two-component lacquer next time, it's a bit more expensive than ordinary lacquer but this way you can achieve a gloss that is similar to a professional paint job. Plus it's way more resistant and can be sanded and polished to high gloss if necessary.
Also you could buy some flat jet spray nozzles, makes spraying with rattle cans easier in my opinion.

I’ll second that. Used it for the first time 2-3 weeks ago. It blew Halfords lacquer out of the park. Unbelievable shine.

Still comes in a can. Just a pin to release the 2 components together on the bottom.

Update. Front bumper now done as well :) took about 5 hours lol.

FYI you need at least 5 cans of 300ml halfords colour paint and i upgraded to the bodyshop halfords lacquer with the fan tip for a better gloss finish. (Worth the extra £2)
