If it's old the housing can go brittle with age and heat so you might have been better off getting a new one Martin. It's not an awful lot to pay for peace of mind.

I've had one crack..
Was going to go with aluminum but it will last another 10+ yrs (assuming it hasn't been in BMW stock for 10+!yrs already!)
The aluminum ones are common in the US
