Should the Fog Light switches under the dash be illuminated when the side lights are switched on ??

The fog light switchs do not have any backlighting, probably why one is convex and the other is concave. It would be difficult to see any backlighting behind the steering wheel spoke.

The convex (domed) switch on the left is for the front fog lights and the concave (hollowed) switch on the right is the rear fog lights. On the US cars rear fogs were not offered and just to make it more confusing the button for the front fog lights is concave! and there are no symbols on the switch plate just the indicator light in the instrument cluster.

I added rear fogs to mine when I was refurbishing the interior, I had to order a used E36 switch from Europe on Ebay, BMW North America would not allow the dealer to order one for me ?? I added the rear fogs for additional visibility during inclement weather, I was mostly concerned with the heavy rain storms I might experience while in Florida. In the US with all the pick-ups and SUV's being driven by distracted drivers, additional visibility can only be a good thing, especially during inclement weather when they feel evan more invincible! I noticed during the trip down to Florida that when I turned the rear fogs on during the rain other vehicles maintained additional distance from me, I call that a success! I was not aware that the factory wired them in series with the front fogs, so I wired mine to operate seperately and I added a small yellow LED to the switch cover to the right of the steering wheel to indicate when they are on.
