After much careful consideration I’ve decided I must reduce my collection of Z3s from the current 6 I have.
Why do I have 6? I am an absolute sucker for giving poorly Z3s a home. Over the last 3 years if I’ve seen a car that needs some love then I’ve tended to buy it.
In short this obsession has expended my money, space and time. My utopia of returning every car back to pristine condition needs to be reeled in.
I’ve secured the future of each car and put 3 back on the road to date. But I now need to share around the job of fully finishing 2 of these cars. Which will allow me to get the 3 other cars back on the road.
Each of my 6 cars has been carefully chosen. All came to me as nice cars but with serious faults. None are rust buckets or wrecks. Unlike many cars on EBay, Gumtree and Autotrader these are genuine cars, sold by someone who knows Z3s well, who will be honest with you and give any required advice.
Each one has a name and is considered as a part of the family
So the 2 I want to move on are as follows.
Cookies - 2.2 2002 Titan Silver 95k miles
This one arrived with me as a nice complete car but with a dead engine. The story of the engine swap is here.
https://zroadster.org/threads/2-2-engine-replacement-project.17379/
While the engine was out the front end was completely dismantled. The engine bay was resprayed. The front subframe, front panel and sway bar were all shotblasted and powder coated. All the jointed suspension components and bushings were replaced. And the front struts replaced with low mileage second hand parts. The struts, steering knuckles and splash guards were all cleaned up and resprayed. The front end is very pretty
The water pump and thermostat were replaced. And the soft top was routinely resealed on the rear bulkhead meaning no nightmare leaks.
So what work is outstanding? Well first of all the car is more than good enough to enjoy as is. And of all my Z3s this is the one that has seen most service covering several thousand trouble-free miles. I used it as my daily car for 5 weeks with no issues going up and down to Swansea.
A rear end rebuild would complete the underside restoration and make it one of the best around in this department following the front end work already completed.
Externally the panels are all rust free but some localised paint is required.
Some smaller jobs remain outstanding as well and I’m happy to give a full list and advice to prospective owners.
Kodak - 2.2 Sport 2001 Topaz Blue 99k miles
This one was up for sale with a local trader who became stuck with it as it was running badly and he just wanted it gone.
Those running faults were quickly fixed with new genuine BMW inlet and exhaust camshaft sensors.
On inspection all 4 suspension struts were dead and replaced with Monroe Reflex units. I found one of the 4 springs had been replaced with a non-Sport spring (different height). So it got 4 new H&R lowering springs.
The sway bar, x-brace and steering knuckles/splashguard were all stripped back, properly treated and sprayed with epoxy.
All front end jointed suspension and bushes were replaced.
This car drives superbly. Better than my 63k 2.2 Sport. Lovely and smooth. And pulls like a train.
So what work is outstanding on this one?
Again this car can be enjoyed as is although it’s a little behind Cookies with a bit more localised paint repair required.
The rear screen needs changing. And I never settled on what seats/door cards to put in so that’s open to negotiation. I’ve nearly finished a Lotus White Sport Seat/door card restoration which can be included for the right money. It was built with a Lotus White interior but was bought with non-original replacement covers.
As per Cookies there is a list of smaller jobs outstanding and a list will be provided to prospective purchasers.
So in summary. Both cars were decent, solid examples on purchase but with major faults now remedied.
Hopefully many members will be familiar with my work from my postings and know I do things properly.
If you want a 2.2 for modest money and with a modest amount of work required to complete and have really nice solid cars that will I genuinely believe give years of trouble free motoring then give me a shout and we can discuss.
I don’t want to tout them as regular sale items. They can be sold as-is, with outstanding work completed (more money obviously) or even with your choice of interior seats/colour (I restore the seats myself).
So just drop me a private message and we can discuss from there.
I’ll put a few pictures up in due course. But I think it’s more important to have a chat and check the cars in the flesh.
Cookies is currently in Swindon. And Kodak is currently in Swansea. But for serious enquiries I can move them between as required.
Remember these are already solid, MOT’d, useable cars. I’m just being honest about what work would take them to the next level that most of us on here aim for.
I’m reluctant to quote prices due to the different ways I’m happy to sell the cars. But if I can’t get around £2,750 and £3,250 respectively then I’ll happily keep hold of them and get them finished myself slowtime. You’ll find prettier cars on the outside for this money. But these cars have had a lot of money spent on future-proofing mechanically.
