Today I decided to have a go at fitting the cruise control to my 2001 2.2 Sport Z3.
The parts were purchased from Sopers for £170.26 inc discount and delivery.
There are 3 parts to order.
Interface B65.71.8.380.054
Switch B61.31.8.360.926
Knob B61.31.1.390.968
Tools required are philips screwdriver, sharp stanley knife and some small cable ties to keep everything neat. A small torch is also handy for searching under the dash for the pre fitted plug used for the cruise control.
Fitting....
First remove the panel under the steering wheel. This is held by one screw underneath. Gently squeeze the two sides together and it should come away easily.View attachment 87655
Using the knife, cut out the pre marked panel as shown above.
Next drop the lower trim panel by removing the three retaining screws so that you have access to the area below the steering wheel.
Now simply push the knob onto the end of the stalk and slot the stalk into position on the steering column. The slot is already there and it simply slides into position. Feed the wire back around the top of the steering column to the other side and plug it into the interface. Make sure it is the right way round!
Now, using the torch, look up inside to find the small white plug which fits into the other side of the interface. Mine was easy to see, but I am told some are quite well hidden! Here is where mine was lurking.
Now you can pull the plug gently towards you. Mine came down easily but some might be taped up, which means unravelling the tape first.
This plugs into the socket on the interface.
On some cars there is a bracket fitted around the steering column with slots which allow you to secure
the interface and the large white plug socket to it. This was not in my car so I used very small cable ties to tidy everything up.
Next I positioned the dust cover and sponge pad around the cruise control stalk, ensuring that the dust cover was tucked up inside the top panel which houses the wiper controls.
That is about all there is to it! Everything is already in place for you to simply slot everything into position.
Before repacing all the panels I test drove the car to ensure everything worked properly..
All in all, an easy upgrade which took around 25 mins to complete.
