After fitting a Gap-Tech roof module on my E85 Z4 a few years ago I decide when I got my E89 I would fit a similar item on it. The Smart Top Module is considerably more expensive than the Gap-Tech one however, but is simpler to fit (no soldering).
First thing is to empty the boot for ease of access to the O/S/R corner of the boot where the module lives.
You need to remove the trim from that corner of the boot. Starting with the hinge covers, one held in place by 3 plastic plugs and one with 3 spring clips.
Next the trim from the side of the body, again 2 plastic plugs and 2 spring clips in the floor (see where the pry tool is located).
Next lower the load cover and close the boot.
Now start the engine and press the "Lower Roof" button and hold it until the boot Deck is fully open, then release the button and switch off the ignition.
Now raise the load cover, and remove the plastic light cover held by 3 plastic plugs.
All the trim bits.
In the bottom corner you see a plastic cover which lifts off to reveal the module connections.
In the middle of the picture is the connector you have to remove. Press the button and move the lever to the left which releases the connector and lifts it out of the socket.
The connector which comes with the Module plugs into this socket and the original plug which you just removed connects to the other end of the new cable. This then fits nicely under the carpet out of the way.
There is a "Fly Lead" from the main loom which connect into the Module itself. You cannot get this wrong, it will only connect one way.
They supply a small square of velcro to secure the Module to the casing.
Next you replace the cover for the electronics.
The light cover,
The trim and the hinge cover.
Lower the load cover again.
Start the engine and pressing the "Lower Roof "button lower the roof until it has completed the operation.
Now, it's time to test your work.
Remote Operation.

I need to alter a couple of settings in the programming, which for me entails removing the Module (only) and hooking it up to my PC. as I don't have a Lap Top. If you spotted the USB cable poking out from the trim, that is what it is for.
It will likely take you longer to read this post than it will to actually fit the Module. Any questions please ask.
Tony.
