First winter storm 2018

.......... and I lost a gnome
Anybody found a gnome?
Clearly the weather has caused great damage distress down south. We need to pull together to restore life's balance and give help in the hour of greatest need. =))

P.s. My gnome fell over. Weeks ago it was though. I've been coping well. :D

I’m in the south of the U.K.
it’s been very wet and windy here, the cover on my Zed has been flapping away furiously!
God I hate this time of year, can’t wait until the spring and summer!

P.s. My gnome fell over.

Quit few years ago, when I lived in another street, my neighbour used to have quite a few of them in his front garden.
When me and my mates came home from the bar, we used to bury them upside down with their heads in the flower beds .... :D
Poor bloke had no idea what was going on, I told him that it was probably a satanic cult .... :ymdevil:

PS, this forum does use Yank spell check, as has been asked by members in the past:-
Neighbor is preferred in American English, and neighbour is preferred in all the other main varieties of English.

Watch out for your paint work ....

Yes thanks it is a good quality cotton lined cover so I’m hoping for no damage but I haven’t looked yet as it hasn’t stopped raining!

HIGH LEVEL WARNING ISSUED ALONG DUTCH RIVERS AFTER 2018 STORMS
By Anna Paganini on January 10, 2018

Some 6.5 million liters of water are flowing into the Netherlands at Lobith, but while heavy, it is no reason to panic, according to the Rijkswaterstaat.
"We can control these water levels just fine", said coordinator Harold van Waaren. He added that it likely would not be a problem even if double the amount of water poured into the Netherlands at that point. That is thanks to the series of locks, dykes, and dams that make up water management, and the infrastructure plan implemented over many years.

The towers of the storm surge gate HollandseIJsselkering were lit red to signify it was inaccessible to shipping traffic.

OVER 300 DAMAGE REPORTS IN LATEST GRONINGEN EARTHQUAKE.
By Anna Paganini on January 10, 2018

The Centrum Veilig Wonen (CVW) in Groningen received 316 damage claims related to a magnitude 3.4 earthquake.
According to CVW spokesperson Arjan van de Leur, the agency is expecting the number of claims to rise much higher in the coming days.

And I was involved in the reason why ....

The region has faced a spate of earthquakes as a result of natural gas extraction there.

Schiphol expects that the storm will reduce the airport's runway capacity. A total of 230 flights have already been canceled and many delays are expected. Travelers are advised to keep an eye on the Schiphol app or website for actual travel information.

Pretty windy over here last night (and no, I wasn't on the curry) but things seem to have quietened down again. Bound to be more road disruption this morning. Some areas without power again.

When I was little, my grandma told of a little Dutch boy who was famous for putting his finger in a dyke and thereby saving the country. Guess you might need to reword the story these days.;)

Got to careful doing things like that Ian or the "me too" will be after him ;)

STORM DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT €90 MILLION; THIRD LARGEST STORM OF THE CENTURY
By Janene Pieters on January 19, 2018

A massive storm that hit the Netherlands on Thursday caused around 90 million euros worth of damage to cars and homes, according to a prognosis the Dutch association of insurers VvV released on Friday morning.

Thursday's storm is the third largest to hit the Netherlands this century, the association said.
The Netherlands annually deals with four to five large storms across the country, with an average annual damage of 50 million euros.

This prognosis does not include damage to government buildings and companies, so the actual damage may still be much higher.

This is the third largest storm in the Netherlands this century, according to the insurers. First and second place go to storms in January 2007 and October 2013, when 175 million euros and 115 million euros of damage was done respectively.
