Well it's been a while since I had a car I had to do some stuff on myself but I just had a very satisfying evening tinkering with the new 2.2

Oil filter and oil changed, old filter was hard to shift but appreciated how easy it was to access,I remember my E30 years ago being far more hassle.

Radio cassette out and new DAB etc unit installed, major issue with noise on this, I suspect a ground problem or an issue with my soldering of the new harness, or possibly it's because I through a cheapish chinese job in! I enjoy listening to the engine so it's really just for bluetooth and satnav instructions so no major problem as noise is less when it's turned on. Annoying though and needs sorting.

Front badge changed, easy but satisfying.

Rubbed down some peeled off lacquer to see if repainting a patch will work, looks like it will be ok. A job for when down at mum in laws as she has a nice big garage, mine is full of brewing equipment!

Air filter done, removed half a bird from inside it!

Next up is spark plugs, discs and pads.

Some loose trim replaced properly and a nice run out round the lanes and back for a beer.

This is fun :)

Good stuff,

You will find the more you do, the more you want to do. And you are right, it is fun, and very satisfying.
And the good thing is that there are people ready and willing to help and guide you through any problems you may encounter.

I can see that I have been having a good old read, amazing the amount of combined knowledge on here! It seems stupid saying I enjoyed changing the oil but in recent years my bmw tinkering has involved laptops and coding and no oily bits and it is a refreshing change.

Still no pictures (slapped wrist time), just wanted to say what a pleasure it is to replace the spark plugs on these engines, total piece of cake! I do wonder if I should replace the ignition coils as well though? They are the originals so 17 years old and at 90K, seems to run perfectly fine and the sparks that came out looked ok, they were the originals as well.

Thoughts appreciated as ignition coils seem not to be that cheap.

A bit late, but welcome to the forum, from down the road (A68), in sunny Shotley Bridge.
If the engine is running well no need to change the coil packs. If you have the urge to spend some money I would suggest you look at replacing shock absorbers and some of the suspension rubber. If it is on original suspension it will be getting tired. Rear shocks are easy, front shocks will probably need some assistance from a garage. Also worth checking the condition of your diff. mount. and replacing it with a poly bush if it is well worn.

Definitely leave the coils till/if they give cause to change them, likely never will.:)

Well I've been away quite a bit but today I got cruise control fitted, very easy good thanks to the article on here. Only normally use it in measured mile speed camera sections of road but as it was so easy to do I thought it made sense. I was going to do the brakes but the tarmac outside is so soft my trolley jack started to sink so I stopped that job :)
