We’ve moved the Topaz Blue 2.2 wiring loom project to the back burner. The loom is all long since done. But it’s getting a full rear end rebuild. Everything blasted/coated or replaced and it’s slow going.

So we decided it was time for Maycee to step forward.

Not too much wrong with her to get her on the road. Then she will get a rolling refresh programme.

The clutch release bearing has gone. So the gearbox is going to have to come out. And the exhaust system dropped. And to do that the dreaded manifold to system bolts will need to be heated up, driven out and replaced

Also, a very bizarre area of rot in an otherwise rock solid car. It’s this area. The water run-off shoulder that sits on the top of the upper spring plate.

Here’s what it normally looks like.

And here’s what it looks like on Maycee with the remains of the old one cleaned up ready for welding.

The other side is rock solid. And so is the rest of the car, including the upper spring plate and chassis side that the shoulder sits on here.

So she’s in the garage today.

They will be plug welding the new shoulder on. And sorting out the exhaust bolts.

The welder is also the MOT tester and ironically said the rotted shoulder wouldn’t have been a fail anyway as it’s not structural (just a water run-off). But we like to do things properly anyhow.

The small replacement panel had to be hand made by a superb guy I found in Bridgend. BMW don’t sell the part separately.

The garage are also doing a dummy MOT test so I have the opportunity to correct advisories and not have them sat on the history.

I’m keeping it and it will live in Swansea when I’m up there.

We’re doing the black 3.0 Sport (Peanut) at the same time and that will be for Swindon. I thought it was a bit over the top doing 2 progress threads at the same time. And despite being the more interesting car engine wise the jobs it needs are largely run of the mill stuff like brakes and suspension.

I’m also keeping the first car I did. Trudy my Topaz Blue 2.2 Sport.

They’ll revolve around over time with 2 in use and 1 in the workshop. That way they can all get full rolling refreshes over a period of time.

That leaves Willy which is currently having the rear end done. And Cookies which is currently enjoying life in Swansea. Both of which I’ll sell in due course.

And yes Maycee’s a proper lady. Low owners, only 73k miles, full service history, well maintained and in pretty nice condition all round.

I do need to refresh the roof seals on the rear bulkhead as the carpets are a bit damp. And the rear bumper paint has strangely gone flat but hopefully that will polish up.

Otherwise it’s the standard brake and suspension refresh first up. Then some seat bolster repairs to the otherwise immaculate interior.

Longer term we’ll do a full rear end refresh like on Willy. Put some new sill covers on, these are 90% good but she deserves perfect.

The rear window is clear and serviceable. But whoever did it used the wrong grade of plastic. And also siliconed it in all the way round! So she may get a new roof at some point too.

And being such a pretty car I may even pull the engine out at some point and get the engine bay soda blasted and resprayed. She’s better than most under the bonnet. But perfect would be better :)

Good to see you have a real MOT tester there Rob.

Tony.
