WTCC AT NÜRBURGRING NORDSCHLEIFE IN 2015

The FIA World Touring Car Championship will race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 2015, opening the programme of the 24 Hour Race.
It was announced today during the pre-race press conference of the 24 Hours.
The event will mark the beginning of a three-year deal between WTCC promoter Eurosport Events and 24h-race organiser ADAC Nordrhein, and also the return of an FIA World Championship event to the terrific Grünhole, thirty-two year after the 1983 ADAC 1000Km, third round of the World Sportscar Championship.
Thanks to this deal, Eurosport Events will bring WTCC back to Germany in style, after a three-year break. The WTCC Race of Germany was previously hosted by Motorsport Arena Oschersleben from 2005 to 2011.
The WTCC usual event format – made of two 60km races – will be revised for the special occasion of running on the 25.378-kilometre combination of the Nürburgring’s GP circuit and the legendary Nordschleife.

“The race at the Nordschleife will definitely be a highlight of the season,” [/I]said François Ribeiro, Eurosport Events COO. “To tackle this monument of car racing history, we asked FIA to revise the sporting regulations for that event. The idea is to held one single 120km race, with one pit stop. The details of this particular format will be worked out between FIA, Eurosport Events and teams before the next FIA Touring Car Commission. Then a proposal will be submitted for approval to the FIA World Motor Sport Council. WTCC drivers are all excited about this idea.”

Walter Hornung, Sports Director of ADAC Nordrhein and Race Director of the 24h race, was just as delighted: “WTCC is a series providing enthralling motor racing and attracting massive attention all over the world. The weekend of the 24 Hours could not have a more attractive opening. With this deal, ADAC Nordrhein also demonstrates that we are keeping on developing the 24h race for the future to make it even more attractive for the fans, media and partners.”

DMSB president Hans-Joachim Stuck commented: “I’m truly delighted with the fact that the World Touring Car Championship – one of the FIA’s top series – is going to return to Germany, next year. I just can’t wait to find out how the WTCC drivers will fare in their battle for World Championship points on my favourite racetrack – the incredibly beautiful but also extremely demanding Nürburgring Nordschleife.”

TEST - MONTEIRO SPLITS THE CITROËN CARS

This made all competitors very cautious in order to avoid damaging their cars even before the actual action starts.
Lap times improved consistently and significantly. In the second half of the session current championship leader José María López posted a provisional fastest lap of 2:27.089 that was soon improved by Hugo Valente’s 2:26.242. However Yvan Muller soon restored Citroën’s supremacy with a lap of 2:25.292.
Eventually López regained the lead for good, stopping the clock at 2:24.574.
The Castrol Honda Racing cars of Tiago Monteiro and Gabriele Tarquini were the closest to the Citroën trio of López, Muller and Sébastien Loeb. Monteiro managed to split them by posting the third fastest lap (2:25.583), while Tarquini (2:25.940) was classified fifth behind Loeb (2:25.794).

Campos Racing’s Dušan Borković was the fastest of the drivers in the Chevrolet RML cars (2:25.954) lying in sixth, only 14 thousandths behind Tarquini. His team-mate Valente slipped down to seventh ahead of Ma Qing Hua (2:27.346), the winner of Moscow’s second race in the fourth Citroën.

Norbert Michelisz (2:27.625) and Gianni Morbidelli (2:27.656) rounded off the top ten.

James Thompson was the fastest of the LADA drivers, eleventh with a lap of 2:29.045, while Franz Engstler topped the TC2T class

    ROB HUFF: THE COMMUTER

Besides carrying out his usual duties as LADA Sport driver in WTCC, Huff is also taking part in the Nürburgring 24 Hour race, sharing a Rotek Racing Audi TTRS car with former WTCC fellow driver Darryl O’Young, team principal Robb Holland and Kevin Gleason.
“I qualified the car at the Nürburgring yesterday and then drove to Spa. I stay here for today’s testing and tomorrow’s qualifying, and as soon as the chequered flag has dropped I’m off again to Germany. I’ll do a few stints on Saturday afternoon and evening, grab a few hours of sleep and then do another two stints very early on Sunday morning before driving back to Spa for the WTCC races,” Huff explained.

PRACTICE 1 – CITROËN DOMINATES AT SPA

On a cold and slightly damp track López set his fastest time on only his second flying lap. Most drivers did indeed set their quickest times around the 7-kilometre Ardennes track at the beginning of the session.

Honda privateer Mehdi Bennani opened the debates with a lap in 2:27.383, a time quickly bettered by Muller in 2:26.480, then Loeb in 2:26.045 and López in 2:24.536. On the next lap, Lopez improved slightly on his time in 2:24.350; a time which would stand for the remainder of the session.

Frenchman Hugo Valente was the fastest man of the opposition in a time of 2:25.804 aboard his Campos Chevrolet Cruze.
The works Castrol Honda Civic cars finished in eighth (Tarquini in 2:26.781) and ninth (Monteiro in 2:26.842), while Rob Huff was the fastest of the Lada Sport Lukoil team in 2:28.407.

A late surprise was staged by Chinese Citroën man Ma Qing Hua who set the third fastest time (2:25.628) at the end of the session.
The second free practice session starts at 12.30 with qualifying to start at 15.00.
