Had an issue with Z after getting it back on the road following lock down and was running fine until I had a little run out and started to cough and splutter with EML coming on and has now visited the local garage only to find a few issues with split hoses and faulty cam sensor plug filled with oil. But now just found out that the ECU has a burned out section. Yet to find out if it can be repaired.
Has anyone experienced replacing the ECU and is it easy to do OR are they best to find one from a scrapped vehicle?

For info your 2.0 runs an MS42 ecu very common and cheap to find if you ever wanted to pick up a replacement. You would need the EWS system on the ECU disabled then it will be plug and play for your car. :coolsteer)

Corrected: MS42

Thanks lee. Sorry for being a dim wit can you enlighten me what's the EWS? The ECU is out of the car and being sent to a local ECU repair centre in Trowbridge to see if they can repair it. It was a small section of circuit route that had burnt out.
The ECU testing site that Robert suggested - they are about 350 new.

If you ask for a new Ecu it is expensive ask for a rebuild as I said in my previous thread it's around £80 to have it tested

I have a very good 2.0 ECU kit - ECU, EWS box and key chip. £80 posted.

EWS = Electronische Weg Sperre or electronic road lock. The plastic ring around the steering lock houses a transponder that reads the chip in the key, passes the yes signal to the EWS box under the dash on the drivers side which communicates with the ECU. The ECU is in the plastic box at the rear corner of the engine bay. Replacing the chip in the key takes about 5-10 minutes and you can have the lot fitted in under an hour.

MS42 on these Siemens units, same ECU as the E39 520i with the M52TU engine.

Thanks for the info very useful - lets see what the village garage say next week if it can be repaired. If not I will keep this in mind and let you know.

Just had the ECU repaired and now all back in the car and running. Hopefully will get some use now and enjoy the rest of the summer!

Many thanks for all the comments and support on this really appreciated. Again just shows how great this forum is for the knowledge base and especially for @Andyboy for reaching out with a plan B if all failed.

Thanks again.
