Hey All,
New to the board. I have a 98 Z3, 2.8 I need to replace the cracked radiator and while researching this, I see lots of info talking about a FAN DELETE option. Is this important? Necessary? I have a quote to replace the radiator but should I do more while the guy is in there rooting around?
Will be replacing the valve cover gasket as well.

Welcome on the forum.

@t-tony, fan delete? Worth it or not?
Going on general consensus I would say it is.

Tony.

ps. In the 70's where I worked Chyrsler cars were having belt driven fans replaced by electric fans back then.

Welcome. If you have an air conditioner might as well just remove the fan, saves it blowing up and destroying your radiator. Don't expect any noticeable gains in power. The oil temp will go up to maybe 105 C which I am told is probably better than running colder. Your air intake will also go up while slow or at idle. Make sure your water pump has been changed as it should be due at that mileage, they are cheap and easy to do.

Cheers.

Hello and welcome.
I did the fan delete mod on my 2.8 a few years ago and have had no problems, however, I have only used the car in the UK! If I were to take it to southern Europe in the summer I would be looking to return to the original cooling set up.
I see you are based in the States. Depending on the temperatures you see I would be cautious. Anything above 25 deg C (77 deg F) is out of my Z3 experience!! Seriously if you get temperatures in the 90s stick with BMW design. Also you need to consider the roads you drive; freeways will generate less heat in the engine than going up some high altitute mountain pass.
If you decide to keep with standard set up I suggest you replace the viscous coupled fan. The blades break up when they are older and often destroy the radiator....which you have just had replaced and why many of us do the fan delete mod!!
