I've recently been giving serious consideration to removing the Viscous Fan on my 2.8 having seen the evidence on here of some of the failed units lately. The car doesn't have Air Con so is not fitted with the Auxiliary Fan in front of the radiator.
Anyway my question to the group is can I fit a second hand Auxiliary fan & the lower temp fan switch, does anybody know if it's a straight forward fit & is the loom the same for all cars with the connectors in place?
Somebody must have done this at sometime,I've had a bit of a search of this & some of the US forums , there seems to be plenty of people deleting the fans on A/C equipped Zeds but nothing on the non A/C.
Thanks in advance
Gary

Not sure if the wiring would be there but maybe a check of your fuse box will tell you by looking to see if if the fuse holder for the aux fan actually has a terminal in it.

The tem switch sits on the left hand side of the radiator (when looking at from of the car) so you should be able to see if you rad has one (or a blank in its place). The wiring might be tucked away under the slam panel or behind the headlight.

As long as your radiator has a point where you have/or can fit, a temp controlled switch it will be possible to fit a cooling fan and remove the viscous driven unit. No different from the fans you could fit back in the 70's which had a manual switch on the dash.

This is something I would like to do, my car is non a/c, there is a blanking plug on the rad, and there seems to be quite a few spare leads up near there, it may even save a little on fuel

If you remove the Viscous fan to rely on the AC fan I'm assuming you will have to change the temp sensor for a lower one as the one fitted will be for the high end cut in, anyone know what the normal cut in temp sensor would be?

Don't know if this will help but the 1.9 don't have viscous only electric fan fan switch from 1.9 may be compatible
At work just now so can't go and look see if it's on rad or not

Can this mod be done on a car with AC. .? The reason I ask is my AC don't work but the switch illuminates , I think this might be the way to go after hearing all the failures of lately.

Got home now had a look my switch on the upper drivers side of radiator.
The wiring comes from the loom at the headlight

Easily done on an AC car.
The AC compressor and fan is probably not kicking in because the gas is too low but before you do anything make sure the AC fan actually works as it should- lots of detail on here: https://zroadster.org/threads/viscous-fan-issue.12814/page-2
Early 2.8's, mine included were wired incorrectly from the factory so the fan only kicked in on high which is too late really. I rewired mine so it kicks in correctly and no issues (also fitted a new aux fan as it was noisy and corroded).

Actually read this thread - deals with the wiring issue too:

This one worth a read to about how to get actual temp reading via the dash:

all good then, a worthwhile job to get on with, makes me wonder why bmw put the engine driven fan on, cost more than likely
