My 2001 Z3 low petrol warning light does not illuminate either when switching on ignition (only lamp to not indicate at this point) or when functionally it should do.

Prior to me removing instrument cluster and because it is not obvious to me from online videos or photos, can anyone give me a steer as to what illuminates this particular function so I can attempt a fix.

cheers.

Good question. I can only think the fault is within the instrument cluster as it doesn't come on during ignition.

It's quite simple getting the instrument cluster out and very easy to change bulbs. You should find how tos on the forum.

That's a rare fault. Never heard of this failing in 20 years of Z3/E36 ownership. Guess there is a bulb?

It will either be a bulb or a dry joint on the solder connections. Its a job that needs some time as you can not rush taking everything out that's needed. Easy enough to do.. well I has to be as I have done it myself... =))

Guys, thanks for showing an interest. I think the only way is to take the plunge next time I’m off and go for it. Like the idea it’s a bulb, dry joint I had not though of.
Will of course update forum with what I find.

keep smiling.

Agree pull the instrument pod, two star drive screws as you look upwards at the binicle. Once these are out you need to pull the unit towards you, a rubber suction cup on the glass face will assist in pulling it forwards to clear the housing. There is enough slack on the wiring to turn it over to disconnect the wiring if you want to take it out to examin in detail. Check the suspect bulb out, there are 14 listed in oem item 2

If they are anyting like the heater panel bulbs they are only available from BMW and extorniate price, suggest you ring Sopers BMW at Lincoln and order them but ask for zroadster forum discount, they will post them to you.
