I made a thread on this when I first joined the forum but was told it was best if I go to my local exhaust centre and ask.

I rang a couple of places today - one in Nuneaton (Custom Chrome), the other in Nottingham (PD Gough) but the cost of a cat back I found to be ridiculous - they both wanted in the region of £500-800 for a cat back system depending on choice of material. This would be just a standard cat back setup, nothing fancy like quad exhausts or anything like that.

Yes they came with a life time warranty, but I've read that many zed owners have gotten a quad setup for around £400 - is that a cat back system too, or does that just include two back boxes with pipes leading to the existing exhaust system?

I need to get a new exhaust at some point soon - as the baffle is bad in mine I believe (buzzes at 2000 RPM) - rather than just getting a new backbox I wanted something a bit special - however - the prices that I got today left me very surprised - I was expecting something in the region of £200-300.

@yocky z3 2.0 recommended the place where he got his done but it's a little far from me (Manchester)

Can anyone give me any guidelines on what I should be looking to spend for a decent system - not necessarily a quad setup just a cat back.

Was undecided whether to go for the dual setup (quad tips) or keep the spare tire and just have twin tips.

I removed the spare tire and tried to unscrew the wire via the hex 'screw', however, no amount of penetrating oil was enough to free it up and I found it impossible to unscrew, I then decided to go for the twin tips but in putting the spare back on I pulled too hard and damaged the handle - it snapped it half

This is the handle that I broke.

Not the end of the world but my tool kit isn't perfect anymore :(

I can't have something broken in the tool kit so it's likely getting the chop tomorrow.

The tires are useless anyway with the amount of debris that settles on them and hardens over time.

Once the wire is out the way is it just a couple of bolts that secure the carrier to the car? - @t-tony

Tomorrow's the day that the zed (hopefully) gets a new exhaust, current one is rattling its t*ts off.

Permitting the carrier is easy to remove after the wire is chopped off I shouldn't have an issue.

Assuming same as Grumpy's carrier Faheem once the cables gone the carrier hinges down on one long bolt. 10mm spanners required, remove nut and slide bolt out. That's it.

Tony.

@Antm72 Yes I am mate, a bloke at work told me to read about back pressure before I made any changes and also said to me that the car will drive poorly unless you get it remapped after getting a catback system. - Is this true? You've said that you've had yours remapped, was that simply for performance gains or because you got a new exhaust?

The car ran fine with the exhaust as it was .After fitting the exhaust and induction i thought the remap would make use of them but there was no issue at all fitting it to the stock engine.

I believe the BMW Engines managment system will compensate for the exhaust. I have had a full cat back on our Z4 and have no issues
