Hi guys ,, after a little advice here ,, is the exhaust rear section on a 3.0 Z3 the same as the 2.8 ? I’ve found many adverts for exhausts (on e-bay) for the 2.8 but very little for the 3.0 - any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance 👍

I can't answer your question directly but if you go on https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select and enter your vehicle ident you can get the part number for your vehicle. You can then search for others with same fit. HTH

The 2.8 is a single pipe into the back box, whereas the 3.0 has twin pipes.

I’m glad you’ve said that as when I look underneath my 3.0 , it seems to have had some form of aftermarket exhaust on ,,,, there is no centre box , just a back box and it’s a single pipe (looks to be approx 3 inch bore) from the front pipe back

Hello Andy,
In my search for a spare back box (just incase) I found that the 2.2 and the 3.0 exhaust are the same with a twin pipe from the manifolds to the back box,

I also believe that the 2.0 and the 2.8 are the same with a twin down pipe leading into a single pipe to the back box with a twin outlet.

It may be that a previous owner needed to replace the middle box/cat section of your car and then found out that a replacement is almost £2,000 from BMW and not widely available in the aftermarket, however there are several different suppliers of the 2.0 and 2.8 system readily available.

I would think the ridiculous cost of the 2.2/3.0 centre exhaust is why a lot of people get a bespoke stainless replacement from an exhaust specialist.

I've seen many adverts on the net and also ebay for specific stainless exhaust suppliers offering a full system for between £350 and £750 for a full system.

check out https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/323482065395 they have a load of good reviews....................

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your help , I’ve looked at that advert on e-bay before ,, I’ve been studying pretty much all the Z3 systems and it does seem like the 2.2 and the 3.0 share the same back box ,, I will give that company a call and see what they say ,, thanks again for your feedback 👍

Plenty of makes, or bespoke, available. I went for the Supersprint Cat back affair. A superb bit of kit that just gets better with age. Circa £750 less fitting. There is a cheaper Supersprint available, about £400, but that's more sporty and would be tiresome on a long run. Mine burbles nicely on the lift-off overrun (smiles like a child 😀).

You could open the baffle gate in the exhaust tips so it's not as quiet at low revs as a free temp measure and see how you get on. You can use INPA to leave it open (I think) or disconnect it and jam it open.

Problem with after market exhausts is dodging those that 'drone' on long runs and what one may hear/suffer, another may not.
