Looking at zephyr's picture look at the oil filler cap. You see the cam cover with two ridges going back either side of the BMW name plate. M44 is twin cam 16 valve.

The M43 is single cam, 8 valve, so only has one ridge.

1 is twin cam and 1 isn’t. Difference is obvious in the width of the valve cover.

Tony.

Sorry I'm late to the party on this one but this discussion has taken place before.

There is no second sensor on the UK 1998 M44. If you insert a UK 98 VIN into real.oem the number 9 on the diagram is faded out to indicate not fitted on this model, although the picture is there. Also it is not included in parts list. See extract below.

Being a long time M44 owner I can also confirm it was not on the original that I removed. HTH

I vaguely recall the 2nd one was to comply with US emission regs. By the way my recall gets vaguer and vaguer - age or pissbeer?;)

Thanks Jonco!! I was sulking in abject misery at having an incorrectly-listed Z3 and having been diddled by the vendor, which added to the perpetual and heavy rain was making me wonder why I'd bothered buying a completely impractical convertible in the first place. Did you know that you can't get a microwave oven in the boot? Long story.
I will now share a pissbeer with you, Zephyr and anyone else that wants to join, now feeling as slightly more of an equal player in the great Z3 game.
