Hi,
I'm part way through refreshing my rear subframe bushes. Its a tougher job than I expected as everything is rusted solid and stuff like the brake back plates all need replacing. Anyway I'm making progress even if it is slow. Well that was until yesterday when I discovered my exhaust system from the manifold backwards had been stolen 😢
I was horrified when I looked at the cost of a new system from BMW -circa 2.5k and the middle section isn't even available any more... It is a year 2000 Z3 3.0, this model seems to have 4 cat's- 2 on the manifold and 2 in the middle section. However there is no 02 sensor after the second pair. Unless anyone knows of a second hand 3.0/2.2 OEM system for sale I'm going to have to look at an after market system. I have a couple of questions...
1/ Does the car really need the second pair of cats or could I get away with silencers instead?
2/ Can anyone recommend an aftermarket system that is similar or only slightly noisier than the oem system? Prior ro this i had a 325i and when the rear silencer went i replaced it with a powerflow silencer, it ruined the car! There was a horrible resonance about 50-60mph and I want to avoid this.

Many Thanks

David

Lots of members swear by Supersprint - Click here I have heard a few members cars and it gives it a very nice tone without being super loud. It screams a little higher up the rev range. Pricey right enough. Magnaflow could be another choice as well as Eisenmann but I would suggest Eisenmann will likely be a good deal nosier.

Could ask a reputable exhaust shop to make a cat back system or beyond. Would expect this to be £600 give or take. Got quote £550 a while back for my 2.8i single vanos 97 which has very different exhaust layout to your 3.0i.

Do you know if I will get away with deleting the secondary cats or will it cause me issues at MOT. A supersprint system front section (with cats) is £2400+ VAT so a full system will cost more than the car is worth...☹

Might your insurance cover this theft? Appreciate it might risk writing off the car though depending on perceived value.

That's my worry, car in its current state won't be worth much- no MOT, I've got all the rear suspension out, so its stuck on axel stands... We buy any car is offering £1000... I've probably go £600 worth of bits in the house waiting to be fitted!

Really sorry to hear of your predicament.

4 cats! Crikes

Certainly worth stealing then especially if the car is already nice and high on axle stands.

Lesson there for the rest of us.

we-buy-any-car-dot-com would inspect the car before paying? I don't think they pay out for a car that has parts missing do they?

Best bet would be to hope that somebody like spursfan has at least some of the bits in his shed.

Shed!

It’s worth asking @spurs fan in a coupe if he has any in his shed.
If by shed you mean my state of the art Zortopsy suite, then I do have a 2.2 that was going to be put back on the road, but my motivation levels to get that done mean it’s likely to get broken for parts.

The full exhaust system may be available, OP and I can discuss.
