My 1999 pre face-lift 2.8 m52 has the later appears to be sams or similar to the face-lift 2.0 .
What i would like to know is what i can find out about the operation of the flap inside the right hand tailpipe.
I have mot'd 2 newer bmw with flap in tailpipe but its a direct drive electric motor that operates it now at idle its shut is the zed same and should be shut at idle and low revs t

So this the set up vacuum pipe from engine to vacuum canister then pipe to electrical solenoid then pipe to valve on rear silencer
So have done the checks on the vacuum side ( if you start engine remove 2 pipes from solenoid join together exhaust flap shuts and stays shut .
So that puts me back to solenoid or before that again so that puts me back to how all works is flap meant to shut when engine running.
Where does the signal for the solenoid come from
Cant find in wiring diagram as don't know what bmw call it .
Can buy new solenoid £28 but one i hace may be ok.
Any help would be appreciated.

Stephen.

I always thought this flap was vacuum controlled, via a small pipe from the exhaust side of the engine. Some folks, me too, pull the hose at the flap and block it off with a golf tee, this leaves the flap open and enhances the exhaust noise Most likely my explanation is not spot on so as always bow to the more knowledgeable :)

I have had a look at the electrical drawings I have and cant see anything unless they call it something very obscure. My car had it originally and the drawings matched and were used for wiring in the stand alone ECU so I thought I would see it.
