Don't think I'll be owning one to be honest. Range and recharging time make it an unattractive package to me, not to mention the cost. Of course as time goes by advances in technology and environment issues will make the EV the norm, but don't think it will come in my lifetime, but then again, I suppose it depends how long I'm gonna live

Simple really. Petrol is for cars, diesel for lorries, electric for household goods. This should be written into statute.

Must now go and turn on my petrol powered washing machine.

Although I share some of the sentiments above, the torque on electric cars is incredible, and its normally a flat line torque from 0 mph to the speed limit .... However, charging times and range are a limiting factor for many electric solutions.

Unfortunately/fortunately, depending on your priorities or view point, electric cars are coming. If I am still able to drive a Z3 in my twilight years, I would like the option of ensuring I can keep it on the road if petrol cars are forced, by cost or legislation, off it. Options to keep them on the road are always good.

Plus, can you think of any modern electric car looking as nice as a Z3!

Currently 1.665 trillion barrels of oil reserves left that can be obtained with current technology. That's 50 years worth of 'black gold' so whilst electric is on the up my view is that it'll be many years of petrol Zed motoring before electric (or indeed any other type of magic) takes over. Long live the Straight Six :D

This electric business is good, save the oil for proper cars and run everything else on electric!

Those who own horses now will own petrol cars in 100 years, those who own petrol cars now will own "alternative-powered" cars in 100 years.

I'd love to have an EV, but they are too impractical at the moment. I enquired about an electric Smart and the salesman wasn't very impressed when I went through the "man-maths" with him.

Current Smart = £15,000, £10 VED, 10ppm
Electric Smart = £19,000, £0 VED, 2ppm

It would take around 50,000 miles to pay back the difference, and they will only lease them for 8,000 mile per year for three years. There is no opportunity to get a financial benefit from electric - YET.

Comparative performance is impressive, though:whistle:. 0-30 is close to unbeatable by any run-of-the-mill petrol car. Instant go-go-go off the lights:wideyed::)

It'll help solve the housing shortage though!
