Error reading from 20 pin connector

Having some issues, looking for some advice on where to start.
Bought a creator c310 to read some more specific codes on my z3
( 2001 2.5l )
I keep getting connection error messages. I was able to connect previously, then it would only occasionally be able to connect. Now nothing. The reader works from the obd2 port in the car for generic codes, but I can't seem to get anything from the 20 pin. I'm considering getting another 20 pin adaptor perhaps the issue is there. Or getting an older laptop to use inpa to see if I can get any info there. Car still runs and drives ok. The slow fail seems to point to a bad connection somewhere. Just wondering if there's a smart spot to start.

Quite often you need to spray the 20 pin port with electrical contact cleaning spray before you get a good connection.
