Bit of an odd one. Sometimes when stoping at a junction the engine just dies. It always restarts, but occassionally when I move the auto shift into drive it just dies again. This happens even with my foot off the throttle pedal. It is very intermittent and I can drive for miles with no problem. There are no engine lights on and once I pull away everything is fine.
Any ideas where to start looking?

Hi Paul this is how my 2.0 Z3 Auto started messing around when the inlet camshaft position sensor was failing. Exact same symptoms and no warning lights.

Tony.

I also had this on my 2.8 last year, occasionally stalling at junctions and a bit slugish but no EML light. Then after a while had a code for the camshaft sensor so changed for a genuine unit and the problem went. Genuine sensors were around £120 so if you can get it checked and confirmed it is this sensor before buying it would be wise.

I had a similar issue with my 2.8 auto. No codes. Cleaned the idle control valve which resolved it.

Agree with the others symptoms for bad Inlet Camshaft sensor, fixed a mates 316 that had this problem, used a Hass brand sensor on that one which fixed the stalling problem. Since you now have a code for the sensor that preety much confirms a bad sensor.

I had the code but it didn't put the light on, which complicates things a bit.

Mates 316 didn't have the EML on either, just the code.

Many people assume that because the light isn't illuminated it won't have registered a code. Always worth hooking the code reader up though.

Exactly the same on my 2.2, no light but (eventually) set a code. I know the general consensus on the forum is to go with BMW sensors but I went with a Meyle one for 25% of a BM one. Still fine after 3 years.....I know 'kiss of death' and all that;)

Likewise Dave and it's still going strong.

Just got this from Soper’s BMW…

Regarding the camshaft sensor, now there are 2 catalogued for the vehicle, but unfortunately it doesn't state which is inlet or exhaust.
They do look different, one is cylindrical and has a lead attached to it, the other is more oval in design and doesn't have an attached lead.
I'll give you the part numbers of both so you can look on line to try an identify the one you need.

12147539165 ( lead attached ) now unfortunately this is on long term back order, with no date as to when it will be available.
Price wise, if l could supply you one, you would be looking at approximately £118 inc. discount and VAT.

12147518628 ( no lead ) this one is available from UK stock and would cost you £109.10 inc. discount and VAT, taking 2 days to source.

can anyone tell me which one I need?
