Used booked an appointment with BMW dealership. I have been told this has affected around 30,000 2003/2004. I want to be on record if there is a recall in the future. Here is Canada it's $125 per hour for labour. Part, if I go with it is over $3500 plus labour!
Ouch, in fact bloody hell! That's almost 1/4 of what I paid for my car. I suppose my odds are 30,000:1 then.:( Good idea to get it known to BMW Brian, you never know they could do a retrospective re-call.

Tony.

Hello .. bad luck with this ... I have owned the following 3.0i E85 z4 roadsters .. 2003 merlot red / 2004 grey / 2005 silver model / then a 2003 model.

Both the 2004 and the 2005 model had sticky steering issues which is normally the servo drive in the steering column, the design was poor and internal lubrication grease and bearing clearances where to blame .. Also the electronics can age and cause this problem as well. Both of these cars had the column changed. Lucky for Z4M owners they use hydraulic steering which is pretty much problem free.

On the 2006 models and newer the steering column was redesigned, the part number is now the same for the older models as well. Just hope my 35is E89 has this issue sorted once and for all … or I will be going back to a Z4M roadster. Good luck and let us know how you get on, if a dealer changes the parts you should get a 2 year warranty on the parts as we do get this in the Uk.

If I recall there was an easy mod for this problem, where the introduction of a grease nipple was made into the column, something BMW forgot about, this can then be greased as part of the service and eradicates the problem.

Ooops sorry Hardtop has already included the link to the Steering Mod:p

Tried the grease nipple fix, didn't work. Off to dealer this afternoon :((
I think it was a bit late for the greasing point to be added in your case as the damage had already been done by the sounds of it, but may be worth doing the mod to stop any future problems, its on my list to do ASAP. Hope you still have both arms and legs when you return:whistle:
