E89 roof problem

I own a 64 plate E89 3.5is and I've never had a roof problem with it. Last week I visited one of Blackpools many many potholes and the bang on my shocks was horrendous to say the least. Since then my roof will not open. Press the button, windows come down, then nothing? No warning lights, no bing bing bing sound, nothing. Two days after the visit to the pothole it had an MOT and the pothole sliced my tyre so had new one fitted. Anyone have a clue why it should affect the roof?

It would happen as the sun is cracking the flags and I can't use my roof
 
I would start with a code reader. You could manually release the roof and visually check that the jarring has not snapped any of the wires to the switches or displaced a switch. Also I suppose a basic that the jarring has not thrown any of your boot items in the way, does the sliding portion have to be closed as well? Just a thought.
 
Check that the rear window part of the roof is sitting square against the bootlid. Then check that both the other 'joint seals' are sitting square.

There was a recent thread on the 'other' forum where the rear roof section had moved on it's hinges and put it all out of alignment, causing the sensors and/or microswitches to stop the roof moving (to prevent damage). It's rare but it can happen.

But a decent code reader is also needed, whatever the problem.
 
Well I give up!!!!! With the lack of an ODB2 code reader I tooke my car into the local LLoyds stealer? I bet you cant guess how much they quoted and still don't know what the fault is?
 
To save you all having sleepless nights wondering how much the quote was I'll tell you.

£5,500......... and they said there would be diagnostic charges on top of that???????

So basically they want to charge me £169 to do a diagnostic on the car to find out what is wrong with it, but have already quoted me £5,500 to fix it????

Am I missing something here? I know I'm old, grumpy, stupid, but even I can't get that stupid with only one head. You would have to have at least three heads to be that stupid.

That's it for me folks, I love my Z4 3.5is but as soon as I get it back its being traded in for a Porsche 911. Sod BMW and there stupid business plan.

Roof issues have seen the demise of many an E89 relationship. Predominantly due to the main dealers charging an exorbitant amount to resolve something that in fairness they have very little experience of.

The saving grace is that there are now plenty of enthusiasts who are sufficiently skilled to diagnose and resolve the issue. Find one of those and don't let the dealership drive you out of the car 👍
 
Ok boys and girls this roof problem and my local stealers response to my problem is really eating away at me. I picked the car up at 12:20pm today and drove to the Porsche dealership in Preston with the express reason to change my car.

I drove a couple of them and to be honest I was not impressed at all!!!

Arriving home back in Blackpool I started to give some thought to the issue and in summary my thinking is to ring BMW UK Customer Services tomorrow and kick off big style.

Reasons:

1. I purchased my Z4 3.5is ten years ago from Sinclair VW in Swansea? (Long story).
2. Since I have owned the car I have had a service plan in place with my local stealer and they are the only ones that have ever touched it, and a BMW Extended warranty with no excess covering the car.
3. Now the local stealer is claiming the £5,500 bill for fixing the roof is not covered by the warranty due to the roof seals failing and allowing water into the boot where the roof pump is situated.
4. So if they are the only ones to have worked on my car and serviced, MOT'd and carried out fluid changes, why have they never told me my roof seals had failed??? I could have paid the £700 for seal replacement and this roof issue either wouldn't have happened or would have been covered by the extended warranty.

This has gone on so long now and I'm drowning in so much of the local stealers bullshit that I'm not sure anymore. Am I being perdantic about this or what?

A local BMW specialist tells me the roof pump is £2100, the local stealer tells me the roof pump is £5000?????????

By the way its not the cost that is the problem at all, its the principle of the thing. I truly feel as though the local stealer is trying to get his hand up my bum as far as he can and make me pay for the experience.

If anyone on this forum works for BMW UK Customer services, my advice is to not answer any calls tomorrow as you may be unlucky and answer my call because it won't be a pleasant experience.
