Just joined! My roof failed to close properly at the weekend. The main roof panel closed, but then the rest stopped.I re opened the roof completely then pressed to close it. This time it closed, but the boot went down with quite a bang. Will a code reader tell me which micro switch/switches are at fault if that's the problem?

A code reader will tell you what the car thinks the problem is.

TBH the Z4 forum is the best place to look. There are millions of threads and some very good ones on the roof issues with the E89.

Thanks for the links Garrie, I'll have a look at those. Thanks also for the offer, but if Tony is having a shed day soon I'll go over and see if he can have a look. I'm in no rush to put the roof down at the moment.

A decent bmw specific code reader will certainly help and may well point out the issue..unfortunately some issues are a diagnosis by exclusion as the roof ECU isn’t that smart..but whatever it’s your first step…

Well, no faults on code reader and the roof is working fine. So don't know what happened, is a valve in the pump on the blink? Who knows, but should I have just bought a newer E85?

Sounds a bit like the issue I had which went away after I got the first wash on the car and treated all the rubber seals with Swissvax.

I'm wondering if like mine yours had not been used regularly by the previous owner - either way glad it's resolved.

On the E85 point I guess only you can decide but personally I don't miss the fabric roof and much prefer the look of the E89 over the E85 - for me without a garage and in the UK climate the E89 is the consummate year round convertible

Both mine had similar symptoms which disappeared with use / when dry…very weird
