Not had this Z4 for long, so just getting to grips with any niggly jobs. Does anyone or has anyone had any issues with a slight creaking/knocking sound when the roof is up? The roof protector in the boot is locked and secure, so now I'm going to give all seals and joints a good clean and lubricate where needed. Whacking AC/DC does the trick, but I'd obviously like it sorted. I know it can be a problem looking at other Z4 forums :bookworm:

A different car with the same problem Pete, Shirl‘s Eos started doing this. Cured by doing exactly what you’re suggesting. I used Silicon Spray on all the roof seals and the problem disappeared. I think it just lets the roof sections settle as the car flexes without them suddenly moving into place.

Tony.

ps. Brian Johnson cures most noises. . . . . ;)

The locating pin in the centre of the clam shell can rub and make a noise. Try some tape on it.

I did wonder about that, so I'll put some tape around the pin today
Thanks

All seals cleaned and coated with a vinyl & rubber cleaner, plus all joints lubricated and virtually all creaking noises gone. Thanks for the input guys.

Good news Pete, things like that can spoil a car.

Hi
Just been reading about these bad boys on Z4 E89 OC FACEBOOK. Don't know much about them (yet) but understand they can cause problems with the roof if not checked. All a bit of a E89 learning curve at present, although I hate to say but I'm really enjoying the drive compared to my beloved Z3, which is why I bought it......for long cruising!

Even after cleaning and lubricating most of the joints there was a pesky knock behind my head, so I decided to let Sytner test drive it and check it out. Various roof panels removed and ALL joints & unseen joints lubricated. The pesky knock has gone, unless you pick a really bumpy road, but there again you expect a slight degree of movement at the end of the day. I will be monitoring however, and if necessary they can they can take another look.

At the same time I ordered two OEM (12631742690) BMW salmon relays...30 quid the pair (not bad), as it's 9 years old and probably due a change......everyone's recommendation, and piece of mind!

I again regrettably have to agree with you, I love my Z3 but 9 out of 10 times I'll grab the e89 keys 🤷‍♂️

Both new Salmon relays fitted, probably the quickest and easiest job I've ever done on a car! Interestingly, their dates were year 2011, so they were 9 years old and due for replacement.....piece of mind eh!
