Driveline clunk - again

I have finally got around to investigating my driveline clunk when changing gears so we pulled out the diff and sent it off to be checked after my maintenance guy thought it was being caused by backlash in the diff. Diff is is spec unfortunately so it's not that.... any other ideas? This is almost the end of the z3 refresh project so I would like to get it right. We are out of ideas on this one.... we cannot find anything wrong or with play but with the roof up it's very apparent. It might be my imagination but it does seem to improve as it warms. I am probably just compensating my driving style. Gearbox and diff oil changed last week.

The gubo, propshaft bearing, worn main beam bushes and diff bush will have a contributing factor but from what I gather it’s a character of the car to an extent. Mine was not that bad unless sloppy gear changes were quite notable. Once I’ve eventually recommissioned mine I will have an answer back looking forward to the end of that rear wheel en steering feel.

You have to start at the front Prop. Shaft U/J and work backwards. Hope you pin it down

Drop the exhaust, heat shield etc and slacken the prop centre joint collar - mark the front and rear prop halves with paint so it's refitted exactly the same. Grease the splines, refit and once the diff is back in, tighten the collar FT.

Driveshaft CV joints are another source. VERY carefully drift the metal end caps from the inner CV ends and pack a load of fresh CV joint grease in there and try again.

Part of my clunking was the propshaft UJ, i dont believe these are serviceable so i just bought a 2nd hand rear section of the driveshaft and it made a decent improvement. People say to mark the shaft when you split it and dont mix/match front and rear sections of the driveshaft but they are made and balanced separately so it shouldn't really matter, certainly got no vibrations with mine.

I do still get a clunk when going 1st to 2nd, but it seems non existent through any other gears. Hope you get it sorted.

Hmm. What vehicle drive shafts can you use? Any 6 cyl Z? Can you use and e36 compact one?

As far as I'm aware they all differ slightly due to the diff input flange size and I think the 2.8s are 2.8 specific but don't quote me on that. If you're getting under the car you can just put the car in gear, get a spanner on the prop/diff nut and give it a wiggle, it will be easy to see and hear if there's any play in the universal joint. Don't need to drop the exhaust and heat shield for this
