My 1997 drivers door handle wasn't holding at the top. Took it apart and it appears that a metal loop that is screwed to the metal part of the door is suppose to attach to the plastic housing around the electric mirror control. Problem is the plastic housing around the mirror switch is broken. Any good fix for this other than replace the entire mirror switch? Thanks

Can you post a pic?

Broken door handles are common. But I can’t see how the mirror switch impacts anything.

It’s the door card and handle that get broken.

They can often be fixed though.

What holds the top of the handle tight against the door?
At the bottom of the handle:
  • A couple of screws inserted from the other side of the door card. Through the door card and into the back of the door handle.
  • If the door card 'sandwhich' area or screw holes on the door handle get damaged the door handle comes loose
  • This end fails a lot less than the other end.
At the top:
  • A small plastic rivet holds the handle to the door but that's not vital
  • A screw goes from the front side through the handle and into the door
  • The plastic on the door handle in this area takes a lot of stress and eventually breaks causing the top of the handle to flop about
  • The door mirror switch is just something that fits in a hole and doesn't contribute to the integrity. But it does need to be removed to reach the screw.

The piece on the door handle where the bolt goes through is broken. Any idea where to get a good used tan handle?

No. Everyone wants them. They are expensive from BMW.

And no one takes them off complete door cards as it makes the door card pretty much unsaleable.

You are better off trying to repair what you have.

Someone who specialises in bumper repairs may be able to plastic weld the damage back together. But you’d need the door card off to take it to him.

Here's a photo of a DIY repair to the drivers door handle on my project car (it came this way). As I'm going to be looking for top $ when I sell the car, the handle is getting replaced. Yes its expensive, but it will look the good.
