I have been doing lots of reading on the forum and thinking about things I can do to keep me sane during these times.....And been getting ideas on upgrades for the Zed.....

Could see about getting a set of 17” wheels , fitting a roof motor, ......but, before all that, perhaps I should sort the minor oil leak between the timing chain covers, ie replace the gaskets.
So read through the method in Bentleys, ( and frightened myself :arghh:, ) and found according to them there are sixteen ‘ special tools’ required to remove the cylinder head, which unfortunately will have to be removed in order to fix the oil leak.

Can Anyone that has removed the cylinder head on a 1.9 M44 engine tell me if you actually need all these tools to complete the job???
I was thinking it would be just a camshaft locking tool that I would need to buy, but I would be grateful for any info on this.

Plus while the cylinder head and timing chain covers are off .....are there any other wear parts that should be replaced at this time ? (Thermostat and water pump excluded)

Thanks
Mazza

I think @Stevo7682 could be the guy to ask Malc. I have no personal knowledge of that mate.

Tony.

Bar tools I already had ( sockets, inverted torque set , torque wrench etc ) only 2 things I bought was a camshaft locking tool

and a flywheel locking pin which I can't put to hand right now.

Stephen.

Thank you Steve!

Tony.

Thanks for posting the video Steve, not such a bad job , if it only takes 10 minutes :whistle:=))=))=))

...... normally takes me that long just to put my boiler suit on:arghh::arghh:

Having watched the videos and read Bentleys through a couple of times again this morning.....I have realised that although they list sixteen ‘special tools’ at the start of the chapter, only about 3 or 4 of them are actually used on the 4 pot engine. Most are required for use on the 6 pot.....:whistle: :bashhead:

It looks doable, even with my basic skill level, ( but if not , I wonder if Steve would like a week in Butlins Bognor =))) , so next step is to get all the part numbers and price it all up.

Should keep me occupied for a while during the lockdown :)

Don’t you go asking Boris for an extension Malc.

Tony.

I had a leak on the M43 upper front cam cover which looks like it could be a similar process.
After fitting new gaskets, you put the bolts in loose on the front cover, then you fit the rocker cover and tighten it down, that presses the front cover down and seals the bottom edge. only then do you tighten the front cover bolts

Just read back to first post where exactly is the oil leak from ( just to clarify)
Stephen.

Hi Steve,
There is a weep from this gasket(s) , cant tell if its the front part or the rear part, or both.
I think, if its just the front gasket then the head doesn’t need to come off, but if its the rear part, it does??

That sounds like it to me Malc. Can you clean it off and see where it weeps from first?

Tony.

I used my local diy garage ramp a while back, and got underneath, but really difficult to tell. I think its the top of the gasket but cant work out where the initial weep starts.
I did think of just splodging gasket sealant along that edge  but I couldn’t face the shame and being outcast from the zed community.=))=))

that's similar to where my M43 had it's leak.
No head removal required on mine. just rocker cover and front cover.
The reason it leaked I had the head gasket changed by a mobile mechanic, I had just moved house in December, had no garage and couldn't be bothered.
He tightened the front cover before the rocker cover so it never pressed down on the gasket. then leaked afterwards
