Anything upstream from the MAF is basically steady state flow, so bigger is best.
The limit to flow rate is the orifice diameter of the MAF, less a little bit for the measuring element.
The next thing to consider is the efficiency of the air filter. Running without an air filter is just madness unless you plan to rebuild the engine every few hundred miles. I found by measurement that the standard paper filters are the most efficient in terms of filtration and flow rate.

If you just want to do a simple comparison test, all you need is two manometers, a vaccum cleaner and some pipe. My (much more complicated) setup allowed me to get real values. You only need to compare mm of water for filter 1 against mm of water for filter 2.
