I have a number of older 1960s cars and the differential unit uses EP75-80 GL4 oil; I can't use GL5 as it would attack some of the internal components. I also use an EP140 oil in worn diffs as it helps reduce the whine.
As I want to replace the diff oil in my June 1998 1.9, I've read recently that you can use any 75-90 oil in the diff. Is this correct or do I need to obtain some of the 'proper' BMW recommended stuff? Does it have to be GL5? I believe in regular oil changes for my older cars and this spills over to my 'moderns' so would using the same EP 75-90 GL4 oil in all of my cars yearly cause any problems?
