Differential Markings/Replacement

I have a 2000 Z3 Roadster 2.3 with approx. 68500 miles in the USA. The differential has a white marking of a circle with and an "X" through it obviously drawn by hand. I've seen similar markings on other models, but I don't know what it means. It also makes the common clicking sound which is a little annoying and worrisome, so I am thinking of replacing it. The underside is in great condition. I have received a quote from Hardeman in the Netherlands for a replacement and exchange, but shipping costs to the USA will likely be prohibitive. Does anyone know a source in the USA for a similar cost and exchange program? I have only seen replacement different in the $4000 range which is not going to happen. Or, perhaps there is a source that offers rebuilt parts or kits. Any thoughts on this?

Hi Bill, have you tried refreshing the oil in the Diff. to see if that improves things?

Hi Tony:

Checking the differential fluid is my next step, but I have not done so thus far. At this stage, I am mainly wondering if the markings are indicative of something. It looks ominous to have a white circle with and "X" through it marked on the lower case, but since I've seen it on photos of other very similar models, I wonder what it's for.

Sorry, I can’t help you re the markings but @Lee May know. Please keep the sun shining as we’re coming over to Kissimmee soon.

Tony.
