Correct, same as my 2.2:thumbsup:

Opie Oils recommended 'Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W 140 (Formerly SAF-XJ 75w-140)'

I thought that was the case just making sure I get the right oil. I have just splashed out on some axle stands from Lidl for £9.99 a pair. so I can do the gearbox and diff oil. no expense spared =))

You need over a litre for the diff, so you have to buy two bottles, unfortunately. It was about £14 / litre when I did mine 6 years ago:(

And it stinks:wtf::wtf::yuck::yuck::wideyed:

Make sure you have the huuuuge allen key head for the diff plugs. Not a common size :)

Bentley say The hex allen key is 14mm or 17mm. (My 1998 1.9 M44 was a 14mm)

Just a tip...but undo the fill (top) one first....in case you take the bottom plug out, drain out the oil and then cant undo the fill one !!!!

EDIT........Nefyn cat beat me to it....obviously can type faster than me =))

Thanks for the tips I have just bought a double ended sump key of eBay for £4-00 14mm and 17mm that should do the job.

But, you need to set the car level before refilling, so you need stands under one end and then jacks or preferably another pair of stands for the other end. Also for easy filling a 2m length of garden hose and a small funnel to pour the oil back in. For the gearbox run the pipe past the right hand side of the engine past the bell housing into the level hole and for the Diff. past either of the rear wheels through the wheel arch.

Just had an email from Opie about what to use (my new diff is more ‘whiney’ than usual).

This was the recommendation, thought it might come in handy for others, not yet ordered some but will go with the Redline Shockproof one.

@opieoils said:

The diff oil is often overlooked in those, so the noise could be due to worn out oil.

The diff needs a 75w-90 GL5 oil.

The Fuchs Syn 5, Millers CRX, Red Line 75w-90 GL5/Lightweight Shockproof, Motul Gear 300, Amsoil Severe Gear and Gulf Competition are ideal for the diff. The Fuchs Sintopoid, Castrol Syntrax Longlife, Millers TRX, Motul Motylgear, Mobil SHC and Gulf Syngear are also good choices. The Red Line Lightweight Shockproof is probably the best choice for keeping it quiet as the Shockproof oils are very good at reducing noise.tul Gear 300, Amsoil Severe Gear and Gulf Competition are ideal for the diff.
