I'm a bit confused by the Bentley manual, it states
"For 96-97 and M version differentials for 98-2002 are filled or topped up with Hypoid oil.
From 98 on Bmw recommends using only specifically formulated synthetic "lifetime" gear oils (SAF-XO)

They all say lifetime filled or such mate.
Contact Opie Oils on here or local factors Sean.

Tony.

If you read the above they don't all state lifetime pal, early Zs use Hypoid but its not very clear

Up to 98 use Hypoid (inc. all ///M models 98 up to 2002) is how I read that.. After, use lifetime? What I meant was lifetime is misleading, I changed the auto oil on my Z3 which was "filled for life"
What year is yours mate?

Tony.

As Tony mentioned, give Opie Oils a call.
I get all the oils, filters etc from them. They're really helpful mate, I think they recommended Castrol syntrax on mine.

Yours is the same as mine mate. I put Castrol Syntrax from Opie in and it's spot on, even quitened down the clunk a bit.
If your doing the gearbox aswell, Castrol Syntrans from the same place.

I take "filled for life" to mean it last until the end of the gearbox , due to oil losing its properties of lubrication. Cheap to change oil than components
I understand the 8 speed auto box is "filled for life" in UK but has scheduled oil changes in North America.

I wouldn't personally trust any oil for 20+ years.

Filled for life is for the warranty period. After that it is filled until death if you don't change it out. Change all fluids regularly, auto, dif, blah blah blah.

Interesting that they say 96-97 + M.
Does it mean 96-97 have clutch packs like the M?
Then after that Torsen type in non M (M always had clutch packs)
