can somebody just confirm what I already believe I think it's terminal...

The car make a funny noise when reversing, it's coming from under the car like something is rubbing. The diff is making that clonk noise at every gear change now so I think it is definitely the diff that is on its way.

Also, when changing down from 3rd to 2nd high in revs the diff ratles loudly so I think that is terminal.

I assume a new one is way to much to justify replacing on a 2k car anyway ?

Oh and I forgot the 2nd jump 50 % of the time !

Any comments welcome.

@Romeo , wow that sure sounds like a lot going on at once. I'd start by getting the car off the ground so you can safely have a look underneath it.Check all your bushings, prop shaft and transmission mounts as well as your engine mountings. How is your suspension, springs, shocks, etc have the exhaust hangers broken? Use a good light and I'm sure you're going to find several items that need changing. I'm sure someone with more experience will be along shortly to help you sort through this but that's where I'd start. HTH JIM

Hi Romeo, do you mean that the car jumps out of 2nd gear? If so that's a gearbox fault however the other problem could be a failed prop shaft universal joint or maybe the rear diff mounting broken. Where are you located?

I would do as Jim says and look at your bushes and fixing points first, the diff and gearbox are quite robust, that said, if it is the diff then you can get a replacement off ebsy for around £100 cigs get the oil £15 and fit your self 3 hours, quite cheap really, gear boxes can be had for around £70.

Got the car on the ram and it's bad news.

The diff and all bushes are definitely gone, the gear box has also some issue and the garage told me I need a replacement and whilst doing it a new clutch would be needed as well as biting point is very high... I can confirm that. :(

Very difficult to change gear and second is almost impossible, the fourth is getting harder by the days.

That's it, the car has to go

Did they quote you for the work? Should be easy enough to pick up a diff off eBay cheap for example (possibly even from Spurs fan). I'm guessing though it's the labour which will be the bigger part of the costs.

I don't know where he's from, but if he's up my end I have a garage and tools available + knowledge + labour.

@Romeo see if you can source the parts, it looks like we have the labour and a plan formulating let us know?

Wish I was closer Romeo!! I'd surely be in. Anything I can source for you from the USA OR Canada just let me know. I'm scouring eBay UK as well as other countries most times I'm not on this forum and certainly don't mind helping where I can. Keep that old girl and put it back on the road. JIM

As the others have said its more likely that all your bushes have gone (not to expensive to replace) causing everything to rattle and knock causing items not being able to align with each other. The gearbox issue is most likely your clutch on its way out.

The biggest question is where are you located?

And of course if you are near me i will be more than happy to carry out any work in my workshop (no labour cost) you cover the cost of parts.

Be nice to keep another zed on the road.

Thanks guys, I am very touched by your help. Sadly I kind of made my mind and I think time has come to upgrade. :D
Even if i get these issues sorted the car will need work to engine, throttle and a new hood plus other bits.
Might be looking for a Z4 or something fun...
By the way gearbox is definitely wrong ... So can't justify spending even more cash.
This car has cost me loads !

Thanks again chaps
