I can't find an OBDII socket on my car although the Bentley manual suggests it is on the side of the centre console. I bought one of the adaptors for the round DLC socket from Ebay and connected my Maxiscan but without success. The Maxiscan cycles through the various protocols but says it can't link to the car. Can anyone shed light on what might be wrong please?

Steve.

If its an earlier car only round plug under bonnet later ones have obd under steering column but still only limited information from there full diagnosis from round plug in engine bay

You should be ok to use the 20pin to 16pin cable with the code reader plugged into the 16pin end of the lead.
The reader is obviously getting its power from the 20pin socket if it is cycling through the menu on the scanner not sure why it won't connect to the car. What year is your 2.8 need to check if it is OBD2 compliant, early cars were not.

If you are struggling connecting to the round one in the engine bay then it could be the terminals have a light coating of rust on them. My Indie had this issue when i had the Z3 and he had to clean the terminals up took him ages to connect to it
