Hi all

Decided to replace bulbs behind instruments today due to rough idle (separate thread) and no engine management light showing.

Found several bulbs missing so fitted bulbs where missing and replaced others while out.
Still no engine management light even when ignition turned on.

I guess it's not supposed to work?!

Trouble now is fitted bulbs in 2 places where they were missing (suspect previous owner removed to sell as only had car for few weeks!)

I now have ASC and ABS warning lights on! To add to my already showing airbag light since taking seat out.

Finally to my question.
Any ideas why the lights?
Could they be related?

More fault code reading I suspect.

I have the pre-facelift 98' model and there is no EML fitted - there is no mention of it in Owner's manual. I think it appeared on facelift models - others will no doubt comment.
There are several threads where previous owners have removed bulbs to disguise faults. In some cases there are back-up LED's to cover bulb failure eg. airbag and items have been inserted in bulb tube to conceal these.

I too have a 98 pre-facelift 2.8 and my mot tester said last test there was no eml on mine. I assumed it had been removed to cover up trouble. Maybe this is not the case. I've tagged @Brian4 to step in. He's very good with the technical stuff and may be able to answer the question regarding the engine management light.

Hi @Grumpy , not much help on this one ours is a face lift and has EML light so making an ASs out of U and ME I assumed they all had.

As to @Dobbo ABS and ASC lights this usually points to failed ABS sensor and/or ABS module. To find out it needs the INPA software plugging in. I have the software but there may be some one nearer than me.

The airbag light is also best reset with INPA software.

Sometimes the ABS lights will go off if driven for a while but not sure about the ASC light.

@GazHyde will remember who else has had this problem.

Thanks for replying Brian. It was worth a punt.

My first 97 2.8 had no eml light but my new 99 2.8 does i thought it odd looking at it as didn't recall it at all on the previous zed.
The engines are different single vanos to dual vanos but other than that the specs where very similar...

This link http://www.bmwz3club.fr/site/doc/manuel_Z3.pdf is to the 1999 manual which clearly shows EML light inclusion.
I have the 1997 edition (part no 01419790661) which has no mention of EML. I have always thought change was at facelift but maybe it was phased in before.

Well the dash has the space/area for both EML and the picture of engine. New proven bulbs in both and nothing happens.

The manual that came to me with the car- Feb 1999 according to under bonnet sticker- this shows both of the lights but against the descriptions of the lights there is an asterix which in the key states "if fitted"

I guess it wasn't fitted/wired on mine but the gauge binnacle is universal.

If I'm going to keep the Z - and believe I am as loving it - then maybe I should purchase the INPATIENT software stated by Brian.

Does anyone know where I get it and how much etc?
How does it work?
I guess install on my laptop and need a connection lead?

From 1st Sep 98 the 2.8 single vanos engine was replaced with the later twin vanos version - a sort of "engine facelift". From Apr 99 the 2.8 changed to the facelift body so it is possible to get the twin vanos engine in both pre- and post-facelift bodies.

Agreed - mine is the same and I tried bulbs with same result. @Brian4 has just posted this link http://www.bcables.com/ in a separate thread.

................Will this one enable me to reset the airbag light also?
I would think so. I have the old BMTechnics package (no longer available) and you can on that. Give them a call or email I'm sure they will provide answers.
