1999 Z3 I've had for a month or so. First had check engine light come on due to gas cap- changed the gasket after OBD2 check Waiting for light to go off after several short runs. Read somewhere that disconnecting battery(-) terminal for 10 minutes would reset it, I reconnect and start engine and ABS and ASC lights come on. car runs fine. What did I do wrong? Car has 77k and runs perfectly

I think you'll find that there ain't no substitute for a decent code-reader, preferably a BMW specific one as opposed to generic. They're not that expensive, and may save a lot of time and money chasing faults.

The DSC light occasionally comes on with mine, erase the codes and it goes away for another year, don't know what the problem is but don't care either, so long as the lights stay off. Mine is one of these, others are available https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274901832523?epid=23037632474&hash=item40016d134b:g:wzsAAOSw7VFhFLv5

Corvettes? Welcome to the world of rust.
funny this one looks lke its been in a museum. Almost perfect paint, undercarriage is spotless, as is interior. You can eat off the engine bay Im happy with it, soft top is good, all electrics work perfectly- now the dumb lights!!!! I can rebuild a vette with closed eyes- no clue of these. Son had an 88 M3 I stored and tinkered with we just sold to an NFL player for 65k USD after paying 7k in 2007! once in a lifetime deal

To read the trouble codes from the ABS, you'll need a scanner with BMW software. Connect to the 20 pin port under the bonnet/hood. This port has access to all modules in the car. The OBD2 port only has access to the engine DME and the Auto-transmission EGS. You will need an OBD2 to 20 pin port adapter cable. These are on E-Bay.

Another couple of scanner options are:

A couple of years ago I had the ASC and brake warning lights come on, at first it was random sometimes wouldn't, sometimes would, my scanner is a very cheap one, and connected to the 20 pin it showed the the abs unit was faulty, took it to a local german car specialist and they found two sensors on the abs were failed changed them for £100 and something (can't remember exactly) and been perfect since........till two days ago, lights came back on abs asc and brake, stayed on for two short journeys but then went off and have stayed that way since, waiting to get a new scanner which hopefully might show the problem is something simple and as said earlier can just be cleared.
Probably no help to you but at least you are not alone.......

Gremlins I think . Lights have been off for several weeks. Went to shop today to fix switch for passenger seat and after work completed, start the car and the ASC and ABS lights back on?????? drove 20 miles- still on. 20 pin now says ASC pump faulty! Next expense LOL
