I've been giving some thought to purchasing a Dash Cam but which one would you recommend with an eye to cost.
Halfords have this one which I'm considering.

Have a look through the threads as there is a really good one featuring dash cams, and even much cheaper than that!

mine was about £15, it was made in china, you get what you pay for, i figured as long as you can see number plates then its ok, the picture is fine but you can get wider angle lenses, go for the widest.
however some dash cams also incorporate a gps removing all doubt as to where an accident happened, assuming this is why you want one
i brought mine as a back-up for the - it was your fault scenarios, though i have since removed it to make room for the sat-nav, you can get cams that hide behind the rear view mirror. you also need to factor in the cost of an sd card, no point in going any smaller than 8gb, this is used up in about 2 hours. depending on definition. my cheapo couldnt handle more that 16gb, most will simply wright over earlier footage automatically and sense an impact and lock that part of the recording to protecting it. .

I like this model as it has no GPS.
It also is easy to remove leaving the bracket behind.
But with a satnav and this below the mirror my field of view will be broken.
Ideally a small unit behind the mirror. Low budget as if it got nicked while the roof was open its no drama.

im going to break my cheapo one up and see if i can remove the cam part, then extend the wires and mount this part separately without the bulkier led screen and memory bit attached (except for the wires).

that one you listed has a 140 degree angle, thats quite good as most cheaper ones only have 120

why not buy the cheap one and see how you get on with it, hey its just £17, then if you do replace it you could use the cheap on as a rear facing cam.

I was talking to Jill only yesterday during our local run out that I ought to get a dash cam for the Euro run. How long do they record for, and can you save particular parts of the recording ?

As I've never owned one I'm not sure but i guess if the memory card was changed say every 2hours you could keep the whole route

yes there are tons of options, the more expensive ones have more tricks, a 8gb card can store between about 2 hours of video though if you lower the resolution then alot more, most movies are about 1 to 2gb in size and run for about 100 min, so a 16 or 32 gb card should be big enough, if you take a laptop or tablet on tour you could save all the footage daily then just put the card back in the cam and go again.

the cam would pay for itself with the first ding (assuming its not your fault) could save you a load of pain.

@littlefeller May be we can have a chat on the Cotswold run and perhaps you can give me a few pointers ? Do they have to be "hard wired" in ?

no not at all, most come with a cig socket, some have largeer capacity batteries and you simply recharge them again either usb or with a cig lighter.

the only reason i hard wired mine was the cable for the cig lighter runs down the front of the dash, if your using it permanently then you need to think about how your going to power it unless you dont mind the dangling wires, the best answer is to fit a couple of usb sockets to the dash, i haven't done this yet but its my next on the list jobs.

Just because you use the cig lighter connector doesn't mean you have to have the cable dangling down from the camera, that's being lazy. ;) Simply tuck it behind the rubber door seal and across the bottom of the glove box. Main problem with cig lighter is they're not ignition controlled so you HAVE to remember to plug it in each time, and beleive me you won't! That'll be the time when you need it, anyway it's easy to hard wire one just make sure you use an ignition fed live not an auxiliary fed one. I can post some more pictures of fitting if you want @Jack Ratt

Tony.

Thanks Tony, I'm ok with most things mechanical and electrical if I can follow instructions. Taking things apart and rebuilding has never been a problem, however I do struggle with "new" technology.

I've retro fitted dozens of car radios in the early days of car ownership so I'm ok finding an ignition fed live. If it's generally the same procedure I'll be ok
