Yours truly attended the 8th Aug sprint meet at Curborough along with some help from my buddy Alan Field. We found the track at the first attempt, always a good start. The weather looked promising in fact beautiful sunshine all day. All the pre lims done, sign on briefing & scrutineering out of the way we were ready for first practice at 09.15. 80 or so cars, some with 2 drivers were marshalled to the start line in number & class order. I was in class Ob & number 8 so the 8th car on the track.

The advice at the briefing was for first timers like me & a few others to use the first run as a sighting lap, good advice, there are some interesting off camber & tight corners along with some short straits which temp you to change up/down a cog. A bit disappointed after the first run 10 seconds off the pace, but this is only the first of 2 practice runs, 2nd practice more like it a 7 sec improvement.

For the next hour we watched the rest of the classes go through their practice, trying to pick up any clues, but with such a diverse range of cars some on slicks, front drive, rear drive saloons, single seater and specials it was difficult to gain anything too positive.

Some great cars in the spectator’s car park also, one a very nice Z3 M roadster, very envious! And another Z4M roadster both carded but didn’t get to meet the owners.

A bit of lunch, then on with the business.

I cocked up my start, tried a second gear start & got bogged down, but still went for it, no improvement, 2nd timed run I have the ASC off & used first, left some rubber but felt good, improved on my best so happy but would have liked another try as I thought I was getting to know the track a bit. I ended up 4th in class & way down the list around 70th fastest for the day, if you get to see some of the competitors you will see what the whole event covered.

All in all a brill day, some great cars, great track & friendly officials, and its free to spectate too!!
