WD40 Specialist White Lithium grease fixed it completly.

That’s similar to what I’m getting,
Where did you spray it to get rid of the sound?

Top and bottom joints in the engine bay and in behind the steering wheel and bingo, it's completely cured.
Thanks for coming back to me, I’ve done the engine bay ones, now how do you get behind the steering wheel?

Cheers,
Connor

My creaking/graunching turned out to be coming from the bush at the bottom of the column. Took the whole lot out and gave it a good spraying, must be a year ago now and hasn't come back. Yet.
Sure I remember something about a bloke with the same problem, not on a Z3 but one of the saloon equivalents, he drilled a small hole at the lower end of the column above the noisy bit and got grease in that way. Might be easier than taking the column out if you feel the urge to go that way.

If you get down and look behind there is a small gap. I gave a squirt and repeated the next day and all was good.
Got even better after a couple of days use.
